I don't know if it was Itagaki's absence, but they made some poor decisions with Ninja Gaiden 3. Some things are better, such as the camera perspective and cinematic structure, but everything else is just, frankly, a disaster. Newcomers might not think it's so bad, but the hardcore fans of the first two games will most likely find that the changes in the formula are not welcome. The combat system has been simplified, the enemy variety is shallow, QTEs everywhere, and uninspired boss fights. However, as I understand, the updated version of the game, Razor's Edge, is far superior. How much better, I'm not sure, and I don't know how it stacks up to the first two Ninja Gaiden games. It was a Wii U exclusive at first, but it's coming to the Xbox 360 and PS3 in April, so I might just give it a try.
Here's to hoping Razor's Edge redeems Team Ninja for this misstep in a once-great series.
