Several days ago, I was attempting to boot up my 360 and open the tray. The tray did not open immediately, but made various and sundry noises before (reluctantly) opening. I put in a game and tried to play it. All was well until I tried to load a save file, after which the game became stuck on the loading screen. I examined the disk, could find no visible damage (except for one spot that might have been pitting and might have been dust).

What I want to know is: is the disc still usable, or do I have to get it replaced?

I asked this question at TeamXbox, and in response they banned me forever, with the only reason given: '. Yes, an apostrophe was the only reason they gave for banning me forever.

So am I some kind of idiot, to not realize what is wrong with my disc? I am still completely mystified, and would like some sort of answer, as this game is one of my favourites.

You said the tray was acting odd... so are you asking about the game itself or the tray on the xBox?
Also, have you tried other games...? Are there any other issues?

Just the game. The xbox has been performing fine since then, and other games work fine.

However, I haven't tried to load any save files from any other games, so I have no idea whether the "load file" function works at all.

The tray on one of our xboxes was getting stuck most of the time, but once we got the game in, it wasn't freezing up while playing. My hubby forced the DVD drive open and closed a few times and it fixed itself. I DON"T recommend trying that though. You could always break the DVD drive. Like Epicfied asked, have you tried any other games or is it just the one game? I would guess that it may be two separate issues, but here's a post from our FB page regarding a similar problem someone else was having:

It sounds like it may be the optical drive going bad, or perhaps a bad disc. I'm guessing that the drive is going, but it might be worth trying the disc on another Xbox to make sure that's not it. Since you opened up the system, Microsoft won't fix it if it's still under warranty unfortunately, but here's a tutorial on how to swap drives:

It will be a pain, but should be worth it since you can get the drives pretty cheap ($20-$40).

To save you some trouble, you might want to call the Technical Support of Xbox. I always call them even for simple issue and they even give free Microsoft points for your inconvenience. If your console is still under warranty, they might even replace it for free.

If the tray was being weird and reluctant, I'd be inclined to think about that before the game itself. Have you been able to use the game since? Any more trouble?
