If you can endure some vexing technical flaws, Alone in the Dark can be a clever, satisfying adventure.

Alone in the Dark seems to hold open contempt for its players. Eden tries hard with many ambitious elements, but ambition is useless without competence and polish. AitD forces the player to fight against bad controls and struggle to find fun within its inherent flaws, which far outstrip its merits. The ultimate payoff just isn't rich enough for it to ask so much. One can only hope that the greatest concept that this game introduces -- episodic action that's broken up like a TV show -- will be implemented into other games. You've seen survival horror done scarier and better elsewhere. Don't get burned by this one.

Alone in the Dark has some good ideas, but it fails at most because it tries them all. Nice visuals, great fire effects and valiant efforts at innovation don’t make up for boring combat, frustrating controls, poorly designed levels and a hackneyed story.

These reviews don't judge the game fairly. This is honestly one of my favorite games. Sure, the game is pretty buggy at times, and the graphics are a bit rough around the edges. Some of the voice acting didn't really turn out as well in English as it did in its original language, sure. But the story is wonderfully engrossing, the atmosphere terrific, and you will be truly emotionally invested. The fact that it's also pretty scary at times definitely doesn't hurt.
