I don't know what the whole hype about the Elder Scrolls franchise is myself.

I mean, I like Bethesda but, only because of Fallout 3 which was awesome!
But I think that there just isn't enough going on in Oblivion and that the world is just too barren and boring with nothing happening for too long as you travel to your next destination.

That approach worked in Fallout 3 as it was a post apocalyptic world that was supposed to be desolate but, Oblivion just doesn't wotk like that.

Have you already played Skyrim? Going backwards in the series can make Oblivion look a lot worse.

It's not for everyone, for sure. But its vastness is what makes it really special. The more you wander, the more you tend to find. I've been surprised at how much there is to find if you just wander aimlessly. Otherwise, there's always the map. It's not really fair to compare the Elder Scrolls games to the Fallout series, since the two are entirely different worlds and require different approaches to each.

I disagree. You just don't want to immerse yourself in the world as much as the FallOut3 or other games. Oblivion and Skyrim, while they are desolate, are some of my favorite games.

I didn't find Oblivion desolate at all. I found it peaceful. Skyrim, on the other hand, was desolate and I did not enjoy that aspect at all. Did you play Morrowind by any chance? The graphics aren't too great but if you buy the PC version and download the graphic overhaul it's about as awesome as Oblivion (graphic wise), and the story line is a whole lot better.

Yeah, going backwards will hurt Oblivion. I found the game extremely fun and only somewhat desolate. I always felt that like Skyrim more people should've been wandering around from place to place...especially since this was a time of peace for the most part. With Skyrim it made sense people stayed off the roads. I did prefer Oblivion more since it was more high fantasy than Skyrim's sword and sorcery approach.

Morrowind is where it's at. Always seemed like something was going on in that game.

I suppose it really depends on your personal preference. I did not find Oblivion or Skyrim to be boring at all. I did not play Morrowind, but I am sure I would like that as well. It is hard to compare Oblivion to Fallout 3, which was in a line of real classics. I never expect games like that to be matched by something like this. Maybe I am alright with it because I lower my expectations.

I think you're alright with it because you're not comparing it with a game from the same company, in the same genre, but is running with a completely different theme and is meant to be played differently lol

I didn't find the game boring, it was actually pretty exciting especially when dungeon delving. Skyrim could be boring and emotionless at time, plus the interface lacked that fantasy feel of Oblivion's parchment interface. Despite that it was still fun, just needed more people out and about.

I have to say this, try playing this game or it's predecessors before you say that it is boring. If you've played Skyrim, it is definitely similar to this game. I honestly find no reason for this game to be boring in any way.

I agree with jaxon when he states it boils down to a matter of preference. A few of my friends have described Skyrim as more of a sleep fest than Oblivion, and it might be because vast, open worlds like these where you can pick up on a certain segment of the game without too much direction can make things seem very slow. Still, I liked the Elder Scroll games for what they offered, but I would not go at it playing for hours upon hours at a time -- except at critical points. Bethesda made the game the way it is simply because it is its style, and not every style will appeal to every gamer.

I found Oblivion boring when I first started playing it, but as I got some more time with it, it became fun on a bun, man. I will say it suffers from a social event/movement in the background. Skyrim had the Stormcloak Rebellion which everyone was talking about. Oblivion kind of had the Oblivion gates, but no one seemed too worried about them, really. Actually they all seemed pretty oblivious to Oblivion.

I think it was more that the world was just...sparse in Oblivion. As beautifully crafted as the world was and with all that lore you should've been bumping into pilgrims, merchants, adventuring bands, etc. often.

Oblivion could've done with more guilds or side factions. Skyrim could've as well. Some bickering among the guilds in Oblivion would've been nice as well. Make you choose where your loyalties are. A dynamic world would worked in both games so that stuff just happens even if you're out and about on other quests only to find out while you were gone some stuff went down.

Yeah more guilds in both would've nice or longer guild quests. I found the thieves guild quest in Skyrim to be better, but the one in Oblivion was just wow. That was some Mission Impossible stuff :p

From my experience I enjoyed Oblivion and Fallout 3 the most out of anything Bethesda has done. I tried Skyrim, but it seems way too colorless and copy+pasted that I can't help but want to replay Oblivion. Morrowind was neat for it being purely based on navigation rather than blatantly being told where to go, but I couldn't get into it at all.
