Xbox One An Xbox One costs $90 more to make than a PS4

I just read an article on Gamespot that states an Xbox One is $90 more expensive to manufacture than a PS4. It costs $471 to make an Xbox One as opposed to $381 for a PS4. The Kinect camera is the main catalyst in this as that alone accounts for $75.

Not much of a surprise as far as I'm concerned. I can understand MS' obsession with making "every household have a Kinect" so that developers are more inclined to implement features that depend on it, but I still wish they would sell a kinect-less model to save money. 500$ is a pretty huge investment for some people, and I for one would be glad to be able to purchase it without a gimmicky camera that I'll likely never use.

Well, I was wondering why the Xbox One costs $100 more than the PS4 so I guess this answers my question. :) I can't help but wonder if the price would be the same on both consoles if the PS4 came with its own version of the Kinect the way the One does.

I really wish they made the Kinect an optional thing, and not something you have to pay for whether you want it or not. I definitely won't be using the voice control, or play too many games with the Kinect.
It's basically added cost for something that I will almost never use.

One hundred percent agree with this. I wish that the Kinect was an optional peripheral because I don't want it. I'm not interested in really buying Kinect games and I'm not going to be using the voice control. In fact I'll probably always keep my Kinect turned off. I'm not a fan of paying for something that I'll probably never use, but it's something that we have to deal with if we want an Xbox One.

I can agree here. While I like the idea of the Kinect, it doesn't HAVE to be part of the console. Everybody has their reasons for something, and if the Kinect is not part of that, then it shouldn't be a part of that. That's why Sony never had to add the EyeToy as an essential part of the console. See how owners of the PS4 enjoy their console without the EyeToy? But Microsoft may have had their reasons, so I guess we can't reason them out for it.

Whoa, it costs more than the PS4? Definitely not going to see price cuts soon. They do that too early and there's gonna be a loss for every unit sold. So everyone was right: the Kinect was a sheer factor in the pricing. But at least there's a little margin in it. So the next-gen begins with consoles having some profit in them. Or not. The whole story doesn't end there, I guess.

as far as you people talking about the kinect, dont knock it till you try it. I know, like most nerds think its all about gaming... well dont get an xbox than. Get a pc and a gaming controller if you like controllers. Otherwise... do more research on what x1 offers vs ps4 vs pc, and dont take someone elses word for it.

Just like the retail price, Xbox One costs more than the PS4. Yeah, many were right then: the Kinect added to the cost. Oh well, that's how it is. If it costs like that, then it costs like that. Either way, I'll get it.

For people saying that they wish the Kinect was optional, I agree. I just have a feeling that Microsoft is shoehorning into XBox One's because they have too much money invested in it from the 360. We can all agree that the Kinect wasn't some amazing peripheral that changed the game. They are probably trying to make the most out of that R&D investment.

I think the Xbox One being $100 more expensive than the PS4 is a fundamental business mistake. I'm sure PS4s will far outsell Xbox Ones during the Christmas season. They should have manufactured units without the Kinect and sold it for the same price as a PS4 just to remain competitive in the market.

Well I read on Reddit that the Ps4 and also the Xbox one both take a deficit when they sell it. They make money off the license. Adding the Kinect was a really bad choice, because I find it that the $100 added compared to the PS4 really drove off a lot of people that were just comparing prices. They could have up-ed their sales if you just sold it seperately maybe.

Wow really? I never knew that it was a whopping $90! But the price between the Xbox one and PS4 is so huge! What!?!

I honestly have faith in both of them because both of there consoles are awesome and great! Can't wait to get them.

I'm not surprised, since they are including Kinect. Surprised that both are selling for a profit on Day 1. That's a huge difference from the 360, Xbox, PS1, PS2, and PS3. Lol, both companies learned their lessons last generation, I suppose.

I'm not surprised that, even without Kinect, the Xbone is slightly more. Sony is a hardware company and MS is a software company, so Sony has the advantage when it comes to hardware, while MS has the advantage when it comes to software (mainly the UI and OS).

Has anyone here actually used the kinect? I cant imagine having an X1 without it now, its amazing and definitely adds to my experience.

I'm guessing that you don't have an XB1. I also thought that I may never use the Kinect as much as MS wanted us to. But trust me you will. There are loads of voice commands and in game features that use Kinect and enhance your games experience. The transition between commands is seamless and fluent. I actually use it quite a bit especially when I don't feel like searching for something,,,I just use voice commands.

So the controller costs $15 for components and manufacturing. So basically they make a LOT more of their profit from the accessories than the actual machines. Which makes sense.
I wonder how much the play and charge kit costs to make.. I know the batteries can't be too cheap.

So Kinect IS the cause of the difference in price between the consoles, for the most part. This pretty much justifies all those people that don't want Kinect complaining about the X1 costing more just because of the bundled in Kinect.

Yupp Sidd, I saw that and was like WTF. You want us to pay $60 for a $15 controller?! That's crazy.

Also, yes the Kinect is very nice. They built the UI thinking the Kinect was mandatory so without it sometimes searching for things can be difficult. Using Kinect makes it easy. Watch the video my thread "First Weekend with XBOX One" they talk about this. Also, at my friends house we tested out the camera on Skype, super clear 1080p. It was great.

I have faith that Microsoft will someday make a less expensive version of the console without the Kinect. Sort of like what Sony did when they made the skinny PS2s.
