I got a little head of myself on my various discussions and forgot about the first boss you fight during the tutorial. I wasn't thinking much of it until I saw the discussion on Raptr and realized people might need guidance with it.
So, first, let me say that there is another boss known as the Stray Demon that you fight later on in the game. He's a lot like the Asylum Demon but there is a difference even though the names become interchangable during discussions sometimes. Even Level One bros will catch themselves calling Asylum Demon the Stray Demon and etc.
So, this is the first boss and you don't have a lot of info on him other then he's bit, fat and packs a punch. This is Dark Souls. Get use to it.
The first thing you want to do is drop and hit with a plummeting attack. This is a constant when you start a new character. Landing that plummeting attack should wipe a significant chunk of HP off of him. Stay behind him, that's a safe spot. It also will get you use to the mechanics of Dark Souls. Where he attacks you don't want to be. Back stab good. Etc.
He has a few attacks and they are all very predictable once you see them a couple times. Get use to rolling away and chugging some estus as needed. The way you beat him is again stay behind him, pop some shots, dodge his telegraphed attacks.
You could also be a pyro and pop a fireball and roll away from an attack. In this case you shouldn't be very close to him at all.
Another way to beat him is to chose the 10 black fire bombs as your starting gift. It will take 5 to bring him down. Now, the Master Key will have meaning longer into the game versus the bombs. You get access to getting a couple things earlier (such as making your estus stronger).
If you do beat him without using the escape door (you'll know it ...trust me) he will drop a weapon that you won't be able to get if you escape and drop onto him later.
Good luck undead friends!
