Xbox 360 Call of Duty: Elite membership free for Black Ops 2

What's the deal with Call of Duty: Elite? I remember when Modern Warfare 3 came out, an Elite membership was like $50, but now it's supposed to be free for Black Ops 2 players. Why is this?

I think when Elite came out for Modern Warfare 3, it cost $50 because it also included all the DLC for the game. Whenever the DLC was released, as an Elite member, you could download it "for free". Now, with Black Ops 2, I think they've separated it so that you can be an Elite member for free but if you want the DLC when it comes out, you have to pay separately for it.

Yeah, I think now the Elite membership just consists of a website where you can go and check your stats and compare them with the stats of other players.
