Xbox One Can anyone actually explain the 'Checking in' thing?

I really don't understand what "checking in" every 24 hours on your home console accomplishes. If I buy an Xbox One game, I put the disc in, and now Live reads it and Halo 9 is now registered to my account and my Xbox One console can play it. It seems to me, if I do anything else with it, like give it to a friend and they register it to their account, that's an online change that's made. In other words, it seems like if a game is registered to you, you should be good to go with it until another online transaction takes place. What does checking in every 24 hours accomplish? They've said it doesn't check for the disc, right? I really don't get it.

*Please note this post isn't intended as criticism, I'm assuming Microsoft has a reason for this process, I'm legitimately trying to understand what their reasoning is. Not looking for opinions on if you disagree with it. I'm already pretty sure most everyone disagrees with it.

Sounds like it has to call home every day at least once or your console will not allow you to do anything. I really hope this changes.

Yeah, but I'm asking what does the actual "calling home" consist of? I hear everyone complaining about it, but I don't understand what it is actually calling home to check? After thinking about this a while today, my guess is that's it's checking with the Live network to make sure you didn't sell it so someone else, then are trying to keep playing it. That is the only thing I can figure. I've said it a million times on here, but I hate how complicated this makes everything. You have to be a lawyer to understand what you can do with games now.

They're checking to see if your still there and if your being an "upstanding citizen". I'm kind of a conspiracy theorist so I look at it in terms of surveillance. Think about it. Why else would a video game console come with a camera and is always listening to you need to consistently be "updated online." I don't care what they say, they can make a product that doesn't require these things but you can't enforce your plan or ideas on someone without trying. This was the first attempt and it obviously didn't go to well. They'll go back to the drawing boards and probably try to do the same thing next time but cover it up.

I think this is just for licensed games, no one has said what happens if the game doesn't have a license. MS already stated that the developers decide if they want a license on there games. What the check does is check for current game licenses, game/console updates, and anything else that needs to be down loaded to your console. I don't mind at all because I don't take my console on trips, they are always connected to the internet when turned on.

I believe the checkin thing is to check for updates since it updates when your not playing.

I think that the Xbox One will ping a server somewhere, telling it that you are using a legit game, and then go back to doing whatever you're doing. I'm still not really sure whether or not if it will wake up at 3 in the morning to do this. It all is really opaque. I wish that Microsoft was a little more clear on how this whole thing works.

The checking thing is for connecting to Live. Imagine that you go to Live, but then your internet connection is cut. The next day, or after 24 hours, you try to play your game but can't, because Xbox One needs to connect to the server to make sure you are playing the copy of your game.

This is to make sure you don't play used games from other people for free. Why? Don't ask me.

Microsoft only wants you and your family to be playing your game. All the check in does is make sure you are still the one playing a game and not other people.
In order to be able to share your digital games with other consoles, this has to be in place. PS4 won't require you to check in, but it also won't allow you to share the games that you bought digitally.

Please check the thread that I made outlining DRM and Sharing. I've tried to make it as simple as I can for people to understand. It's called "Ultimate DRM and Sharing Breakdown."

I don't like the notion of this to be honest, seems that Microsoft are wanting to spy on their players. It actually won't surprise me if it comes out later on that this has been the case and people get sued. Again, just another reason for me to purchase PS4 over the Xbox. I really think it's quite harsh for Xbox to go so far to stop you playing used games.

So your purchasing a PS4 because of a rumor that IMO is rather ridicules. I am purchasing a Xbox One because it has the features and games I want.

Why Cant you set it to automatic check in if youer not at home??? iam new so sorry if i did it wrong!

I cannot believe that no-one seems to realize the truth. Lending games, and even used games are not their real concern. The real concern is PIRACY!!! Microsoft lost many millions to piracy with the 360, and had no way to stop it (at least not single player games). The only way they can stop piracy is:
1. Require all games discs to be installed onto HD.
2. Bind all installed games to user profile on HD.
3. Require all games are played from HD, after confirming legit status on HD.
4. Constantly check to confirm all games on HD are genuine. Checking every 24hrs will not allow pirates to play non-legit games. Live will not have to be the only weapon they can use to fight piracy. If it's one thing that Microsoft can do, its write good software. They can keep up with any type of hacking/piracy with a constant connection to your console, and the ability to read and write to your HD as needed.
I really believe this is Microsoft's true goal. The whole thing about publishers/developers wanting a cut from used sales, while in my opinion justified, is just icing on the cake. Most of the rancor over lending games, and used games is just code for the pirates to complain and bitch because they will not be able to play Xbox One games without paying for them. Better know as stealing in my day. By the way, I am pre-ordering mine this weekend. I have no problems with buying the games I want to play. I also have always kept my games in pristine condition (my Halo Combat Evolved disc & case is undistinguishable from my new Halo 4), so I do not care to buy poorly cared for, used games.
