I see some people buying the extra battery packs and/or controller charging stations.

I have some Sony AA rechargeable batteries I use for my remote controls and have 4 extras
I can just charge up and top off.

Is this about the same as what that stuff does? I have not really seen much about charging the controller.

I don't have my new system yet, but I always used regular rechargeable AA batteries for my 360 controllers. I never messed around with any of the official charging kits. Just get yourself a good set of batteries and a good quality charger and you should be fine. All you need is a spare set with a good charge and you really don't need much else.

Stick to what works best for you. What you have seems perfectly fine. I use rechargeable batteries as well.

the xbox charging kit/cable is a full kit similar to the 360. its a battery pack(hard plastic insert) not 2 batteries(insert).. its an actually power pack you insert. you use the cable(6ft) as a cord in charging system. the ord itself goes in the left side(your left with you facing system from front) of the system. once connected th part that goes into the controller has a white led/light that indicates its connected. it may turn an orange color first to indicate its charging.

i play with my controller plugged in the charging/port so i cant say how long the battery life would be off the charger or on batteries)

the charger kit i have is

I have a recharge kit for my 360 that I got I think Xmas of 2010, I stopped using it around Spring/Summer of this year since it stopped holding a charge for more than maybe 15hrs of gaming. Terrible. I bought a 4 pack plus charger of 2500mah Sanyo Eneloop for $40 shipped off Amazon back in beginning of October. Way way better

I have energizer rechargeable batteries. I have had the recharger ever since 06 and it is still kicking. I just bought new batteries about twice. And each pack was $10. That's in 7 years. Super cheap compared to buying a kit.

I have the Energizer charging dock and after giving it a full charge before launch day I have yet to need to recharge. It's amazing really that's four full days of gaming on one charge.

I kept my Nyko charging I bought for the XB1 and it works perfectly! Both controllers charge within minutes.

I'm all about rechargeable batteries. There is nothing more annoying than having to constantly buy new batteries for your controller. A good charging dock always helps. I had a cheap one that barely kept my controller charged for 2 days. Energizer's charging dock works great for me, it keeps my batteries going for twice as long before I have to dock them again.

I've found with chargers is that the ones that try to charge very quickly and get hot tend to wear out the life of your batteries. I had one charger that claimed to work in under an hour, which it did, but eventually my batteries needed constant charging. I have an Energizer one now that was a little more but works great. I go a week or more without recharging.

If it works for you, don't worry about 'what's cool' or what everybody else is doing.
Nothing wrong or freakish about using standard rechargeable batteries.

I only use packs because it's easier for me to just set my controller on the station instead of always taking batteries in and out...
