Even in its best moments, Dead Space 3 never quite reaches the highs of Dead Space 2: there's nothing as unforgettable as the gym battle, as beautiful as fixing the solar array, or as jaw-dropping as watching a mother and her necromorph baby explode. But this sequel's pulse-pounding action, epic scope, clever co-op play, and (mostly) absorbing story still deliver hours of fun. Any shooter fan will have a great time; those seeking pure horror will feel about as abandoned as they do by more recent Resident Evil games.

The combat system and the world Visceral has crafted in Dead Space 3 is so expertly built and well-wrought, I found myself consciously overlooking my main criticisms, because I love playing it and spending time with it. This is an important distinction to make: loving a game while being fully aware of its faults.

Visceral laid the foundation for a terrific horror series with the first Dead Space. The clean, HUD-less presentation, dismemberment-focused gunplay, and expertly crafted derelicts have made each successive entry feel ahead of its time. Dead Space 3 evolves the winning formula into a title not only befitting of the fantastic series, but also one of the best games of this generation.

This can't repeat the original Dead Space's first-blush brilliance, but it does make for an interesting, thoughtfully constructed horror game. Dead Space 3's only major stumble, which is forgivable in light of its other accomplishments, is in combat against other armed soldiers.

Dead Space 3 carries the series' standard admirably, thanks to deep weapon crafting and a wealth of exploratory possibilities.

Dead Space 3 is an enjoyable, highly polished experience that will fill in a lot of story gaps for returning fans. But if you’re looking to get scared, this is anything but survival-horror.
