Dead Space was the first installment of the Dead Space series. Developed by Redwood Shores and released October 14, 2008, Dead Space follows engineer Isaac Clark into the wreckage of the Ishimura, a “world cracker” class spaceship. What he finds there is carnage and mayhem, with gruesome scenes and twisted monsters around every corner. The game is one of the best examples of the survival horror genre, and it offered a fantastic play experience.
Dead Space offers 48 achievements worth a total of 1000 gamer points. You’ll need to play through the game two full times and a partial third time to earn all the achievements. There are two achievements that posed a bit of a challenge for me: “Don’t Get Cocky, Kid” and “Slugger.” The rest of the game’s achievements are easily attainable, with a difficulty rating of 3/10 for avid fans of shooters and 5/10 for more casual gamers.
Note: The secret achievements do contain spoilers on bosses, so refrain from reading them if you are worried about finding out about the game’s bosses. Other than that there are no story spoilers in this guide.

Complete the game on any difficulty setting.

Epic Tier 3 Engineer (150G)
Complete the game on the hardest difficulty setting.
Completing the game on any difficulty will unlock Impossible difficulty. You’ll need to complete the game a second time on Impossible difficulty for this. Enemies take more damage and deal more damage to you and ammo, money, and items in general drop in lower amounts. Make sure you pick up everything, and when you run out of space make the extra trek to the nearest bank to deposit items. Never sell health packs or ammo. You can sell air canisters for extra cash. Conserve ammo as much as possible. I suggest going for “One Gun” during this playthrough, as only carrying one gun means no wasted money or upgrades on others, as well as extra ammo for your Plasma Cutter. Use stasis regularly (if you’re not against cheats, the Stasis cheat can help a lot with this playthrough). Finish the game on Impossible difficulty and the achievement is yours.
Pack Rat (10G)
Store 25 items in the safe.
Don’t sell anything before you get this achievement, just drop any extra items into the safe. Once you have 25 items in there you can sell the excess for a decent profit. This shouldn’t take too long, and once you have 25 items in your safe the achievement is yours.
Story Teller (20G)
Collect 75 logs.
See “Legend Teller” for details. Collect 75 logs and the achievement is yours.
Legend Teller (40G)
Collect 150 logs.
There are 168 total logs in Dead Space, so you do not need to collect every single one. Logs include text logs, audio logs, and video logs. None of them are very hidden, and if you’re diligently searching for ammo, items, and upgrade nodes you will have no problem getting this on your first playthrough. If you don’t, search a little more carefully in your next playthrough and you’ll get it. Collect 150 logs and the achievement is yours.
Full Arsenal (30G)
Own every Weapon in the game.
There are 7 different stock weapons in Dead Space, costing a total of 55,000 credits.
Collect all the schematics and purchase all 7 weapons and the achievement is yours.
Z-Baller (5G)
Complete Level 6 in Zero-G Basketball.
During Chapter 10 you will pass through a locker room and find a Zero-G room that has a basketball net and various platforms. Clear out the enemies and start the mini game. You must tie or beat the high score of each round to move on to the next round. The high score is the one that you set in the previous round, so the best way to go about this is to jump to the first platform in round one, score 20 points, and then wait for the time to run up. Start round two and repeat the same thing, scoring 21 points and waiting for the time to end. This makes each round as easy as possible. If you go for multipliers and end up with a very high score early you will need to beat that each time. Complete all 6 rounds and the achievement is yours.
Merchant (10G)
Collect 8 schematics.
There are far more than 8 schematics in the game. You’ll get four for weapons (see above for details) and 6 for suits, which already puts you over the required 8. There are also schematics for weapon ammo, so you shouldn’t have a problem finding enough. Collect 8 schematics and the achievement is yours.
Armstrong (10G)
Shoot 50 objects using Kinesis.
You can get this in Chapter 2 as soon as you get the Kinesis module. Find any loose item, such as a chair or a box, and aim at it. Use Kinesis to pick it up, then press the trigger to shoot it. Repeat this 50 times and the achievement is yours.
Marksman (5G)
Dismember 20 limbs.
See “Butcher” for details. Shoot off 20 limbs and the achievement is yours.
Surgeon (20G)
Dismember 500 limbs.
See “Butcher” for details. Shoot off 500 limbs and the achievement is yours.
Butcher (40G)
Dismember 1000 limbs.
Shooting the limbs off monsters is the key aspect of Dead Space, so this shouldn’t be too much of an issue. If you don’t get this on your first playthrough, don’t worry. When you play the game on Impossible difficulty you will absolutely need to be shooting the limbs off things in order to conserve ammo and deal enough damage, so you will either get this achievement near the end of your first playthrough or during your playthrough of Impossible difficulty. Shoot 1000 limbs off enemies and the achievement is yours.
Freeze (15G)
Use Stasis on 50 enemies.
You should get this by the time you finish your Impossible playthrough. If you have trouble (or just keep forgetting that you have Stasis as I did), find a room with at least one enemy and a Stasis recharge point. Keep shooting the enemy with Stasis and recharging until you hit 50. Freeze enemies 50 times and the achievement is yours.
Crackshot (5G)
Achieve a perfect score in the Shooting Gallery.
You will find the Shooting Gallery in Chapter 9. This mini game is not overly difficult, but it will take some patience and a bit of practice. The goal is to shoot the red targets without hitting any of the blue targets. Use the Plasma Cutter and have it turned to the vertical firing mode. You get decent prizes for each round, so it’s worth going through on each playthrough. Keep replaying the mini-game until you get through without missing any of the red targets and without hitting any of the blue ones. Get the perfect score and the achievement is yours.
Air Alert (10G)
Zero-G Jump over 100 times.
The easiest place to get this is during the Zero-G Basketball mini game in Chapter 10. After (or before) you’ve completed the mini game you can enter the room and just keep jumping from wall to wall. Complete 100 jumps and the achievement is yours.
One Gun (40G)
Beat the game using only the Plasma Cutter.
You need to get through the entire game without EVER firing a weapon other than the Plasma Cutter. This sounds tough, but it actually makes the game much, much easier. I suggest doing this on Impossible difficulty, as having only one gun on you will ensure that all ammo drops are for that gun. You can also dump all of your nodes into this gun. Once you’ve gotten this achievement it will actually be tough for you to use different weapons because of how efficient this one is! Complete the game using only your Plasma Cutter and the achievement is yours.
Brawler (10G)
Kill at least 30 enemies with a melee attack.
The best way to go about this is to shoot the legs off of an enemy and then run up and start pressing RB to stomp on it. If you have trouble you can Stasis the enemy first. Kill 30 enemies in this way and the achievement is yours.
Maxed Out (75G)
Upgrade all weapons and equipment.
You will need to collect a total of 155 Power Nodes to upgrade all of your weapons to the max. The key here is to NOT SELL a single weapon you buy. Find all of the yellow and blue cases that you can as they always contain Power Nodes. You can also buy Power Nodes from the store for 10,000 credits, but I don’t suggest this until you get to New Game+. If you find everything and don’t use cheats you can get this by halfway through your New Game+. If you use cheats you can get this around Chapter 3 or 4 of the New Game+.
You do not need to fill in every node on the guns; you can trace the most efficient route to the actual power ups and just fill those in. Once you’ve filled in all of the upgrade slots on all of your weapons the achievement is yours.
Ragdoll Check (5G)
Force an enemy into a Gravity Panel 5 times.
This can be done in Chapter 4. You will get to an area where floor panels are missing and have a blue particle effect going up from them. Do not step on these yourself, they will kill you instantly. Also, do not shoot any of the enemies in the area, you will need almost all of them. Instead, lure them near a panel and shoot them with Stasis, then walk into them to push them towards a panel. Stop moving as soon as they get shot upwards or else you’ll follow them to your death. If you don’t get all five in Chapter 4 you will have another opportunity in Chapter 9, so don’t worry. Do this five times and the achievement is yours.
Big Spender (10G)
Spend 300,000 credits at the store.
This can be done across multiple playthroughs, so you should get this before you get “Maxed Out,” especially if you’re buying Power Nodes. Spend 300,000 credits total at the store and the achievement is yours.
Full Contact (10G)
Kill 30 enemies with the Contact Beam.
You can do this at any time after you’ve acquired the Contact Beam. To fire it, hold RT until it charges completely, then release to fire a beam of energy at the enemies. Most enemies will die in one hit from this gun. Kill 30 enemies with it and the achievement is yours.
A Cut Above (10G)
Kill 30 enemies with the Ripper.
You can do this at any time after you’ve acquired the Ripper. This gun can dismember enemies very easily, which can help towards the “Butcher” achievement. Kill 30 enemies with it and the achievement is yours.
Tool Time (10G)
Kill 30 enemies with the Plasma Cutter.
You won’t need to work towards this achievement at all, as you’ll obviously be killing well over 30 enemies with it during the “One Gun” achievement.
Pusher (10G)
Kill 30 enemies with the Force Gun.
You can do this at any time after you’ve acquired the Force Gun. This gun works best very close to enemies. Kill 30 enemies with it and the achievement is yours.
Live With the Hot Ones (10G)
Kill 30 enemies with the Flamethrower.
You can do this at any time after you’ve acquired the Flamethrower. This gun works best against the small child-like necromorphs. Kill 30 enemies with it and the achievement is yours.
Autofire (10G)
Kill 30 enemies with the Pulse Rifle.
You can do this at any time after you’ve acquired the Pulse Rifle. Aim for the limbs on enemies, otherwise you will eat through a TON of ammo with this gun. Kill 30 enemies with it and the achievement is yours.
Eviscerator (10G)
Kill 30 enemies with the Line Gun.
You can do this at any time after you’ve acquired the Line Gun. Most enemies will die in one shot from this gun, especially if you aim at their shoulders (dismembering them in the process). Kill 30 enemies with it and the achievement is yours.
There’s Always Peng (15G)
Find the Peng Treasure.
You can find the Peng statue on Chapter 11. When you reach the ship area from Chapter 1 you will be able to go out on the walkways. Peng is located between the two walkways just short of halfway down. Use Kinesis to pick it up and the achievement is yours. Now go sell it for the 30,000 credits (which you can put towards your Power Nodes!)
Secret Achievements
Exterminator (15G)
Kill the Leviathan.
You will fight the Leviathan at the end of Chapter 6. Shoot the yellow nodules on the tentacles that pop up. Once you’ve destroyed all three the enemy will start shooting large explosive rocks at you. You can either catch them with Kinesis and fire them back at it, or shoot the rocks while they’re still in its mouth to deal extra damage. After dealing a decent amount of damage the Leviathan will die and the achievement is yours.
Brute Force (15G)
Kill a Brute.
You will face a lot of these guys during the game. Use your most powerful gun and aim for the limbs too slow them down and deal extra damage. Aim between the shoulder blades when you get the chance. Kill one and the achievement is yours.
Mindless Prey (30G)
Kill the Hive Mind.
This is the final boss of the game. This boss is actually very easy. Shoot the yellow targets at the top, once you’ve destroyed those more will pop up in the creature’s ribs. Shoot those and the creature will die. Once you’ve defeated it the achievement is yours.
Playing Catch (10G)
Catch a Brute or Leviathan Pod using Kinesis.
The easiest time to do this is during the fight against the Leviathan. After you’ve destroyed its tentacles it will start spitting explosive rocks at you. Grab one from midair with Kinesis and shoot it back at Leviathan and the achievement is yours.
Don’t Get Cocky, Kid (10G)
Survive the ADS cannon with over 50% shield strength remaining.
This is by far the most annoying achievement in the game. In Chapter 4 you will be told to man a canon and shoot asteroids before the hit the ship. Save your game before you start this! You will start at 85%, and you must shoot the asteroids down before they hit the ship. If you fall below 50% integrity reload your save and try again. You can turn the brightness up on the game to make it a bit easier to see the incoming rocks. There is no set pattern, so this achievement is 25% skill and 75% luck. Complete the event with at least 50% shields remaining and the achievement is yours.
Kickin It (10G)
Escape from a Lurker’s grab attack 10 times.
Lurkers are the small creatures that have three tentacles that come out of their back. Run up next to one and let it attach to you. Tap A to rip the Lurker off of you. Do this 10 times and the achievement is yours.
Slugger (10G)
Kill the Slug Boss with more than 50% shield strength remaining.
During Chapter 8 you will need to use a canon to clear the blast doors. Save your game before jumping on the canon. To clear the blast doors you will need to destroy a massive slug-like creature that is attached to them. You need to shoot the thing’s tentacles off. While doing this, destroy any objects that get thrown towards the ship. You start at 100% integrity, and if you destroy the tentacles quickly this shouldn’t be an issue. If you fall under 50%, just reload the game and try again. Finish the fight with at least 50% integrity and the achievement is yours.
Get off My Ship (15G)
Kill the Slug Boss.
Do the “Slugger” achievement above. The only difference is that the remaining hull integrity at the end of the fight does not matter. Complete the fight and the achievement is yours.
Cheats
Cheats do not disable achievements in Dead Space, so use them to your heart’s content. They are most helpful during Impossible difficulty (Stasis refill especially) and when going for the “Maxed Out” achievement. You can use the one time cheats during your first play, and again during the new game plus to give you a jump on the Power Nodes needed.
Press START and input the following:
Reusable:
X X Y Y Y – Refill your Oxygen
X Y Y X Y – Refill your Stasis
One time per playthrough:
X X X Y X – 1000 Credits
X X X Y Y – 2000 Credits
X X X Y X Y – 5000 Credits
X Y Y Y X X Y – 10000 Credits
Y X X X Y – 2 Power Nodes
Y X Y X X Y X X Y X X Y – 5 Power Nodes
Playthrough Guide
First Playthrough
- You can play on Easy or Medium difficulty. I highly suggest medium, as the actual challenge is still fairly low. Easy will make some achievements, well, easier, but none of them are ridiculous on medium.
- Work towards getting all of the achievements in the game in this playthrough, with the exception of: “Epic Tier 3 Engineer,” “One Gun,” and “Maxed Out.” All the remaining achievements can be obtained on this first playthrough.
- Play the game on Impossible difficulty. Despite the name, this mode is not too much harder.
- On this playthrough you should also be working on the “One Gun” achievement. The guide for this is simple: DO NOT FIRE ANY GUN OTHER THAN THE PLASMA CUTTER EVER! This actually made the game easier for me, since you can put all of the nodes you acquire into the Plasma Cutter, and if you only carry the Plasma Cutter you will only get ammo for it (meaning more useful ammo). The Plasma Cutter is by far the most versatile weapon in the entire game, and you won’t have any problems getting through with it.
- Complete this run and you’ll get the “Epic Tier 3 Engineer” and “One Gun” achievements.
- Load up a New Game + from your first easy/medium playthrough. The entire goal here is to get “Maxed Out” and any weapon kill achievements that you may have missed the first time.
- Depending on how diligent you were in finding all the power nodes (or buying extras) the first time, you may only need to play through to chapter 4 or 5, otherwise you’ll need to play further. In either case, upgrade all of your weapons completely on this playthrough and fill in any achievements you may have missed.
- Look into these achievements before you start so that you don’t miss them: “Ragdoll Check,” “Playing Catch,” “Don’t Get Cocky, Kid,” “Crackshot,” “Zero-G Baller,” and “There’s Always Peng.”
Note: Cheats do not affect achievements and can be used. If you want to use them you can find them at the very end of this guide.

- Flamethrower – you will find the schematic for this weapon in Chapter 2. After you get the kinesis module, move the crates and continue down the hall. You’ll see the schematic on the floor.
- Ripper – you will find the schematic for this weapon in Chapter 3. While refueling the engine you will cross a large gap, then pass a save station. The schematic will be on the floor just past the save station.
- Force Gun – you will find the schematic for this weapon in Chapter 4. After reaching the deck, use the elevator that faces the front of the area and ride it to level three. The schematic will be on the floor of the room you exit into.
- Contact Beam – you will find the schematic for this weapon in Chapter 4. After reaching the deck, use the elevator that faces away from the front of the ship and ride it down to the lobby. The schematic will be on the floor in the hallway leading from the lobby.
Collect all the schematics and purchase all 7 weapons and the achievement is yours.
