Xbox 360 Defeating knights in Halo 4

Is there some easier way to defeat the knight lancers and knight commanders? Sometimes enemies have some weapon or method that they have more trouble defending against and I wondered if the knight does.

Cant exactly remember as I havent played Halo 4 in a while, but what I did was to catch them off guard. Shoot them with the DMR alot until they block or shoot back, then run away so that they dont follow you. They will still be damaged, so go back and do it over again untill they die. Its a long and tedious process, but I did the spartan ops on legendary difficulty and that was all that worked for me.

if you can try and hold onto a power weapon it always helps. Otherwise treat them the same as elites and try and pick em off with a dmr/br/light rifle. I can't remember if plasma pistols work but then again I think there's only a small amount of missions where forerunners and covenant are both present. Oh also if you're trying to do solo legendary be super careful with the shotgun and their teleports.

If you shoot them from a distance, will they still come after you? If not, a range weapon would definitely be the better option. If you HAVE to do melee, attack-and-retreat definitely sounds like the best option.
