DmC; Devil May Cry Boss Guide
Some of the most enjoyable moments in Devil May Cry are the boss fights. They are few and far between which seems to build the anticipation as you reach some of these fights. For some, they can be the quickest and easiest portion of the game, for others, not quite. Let’s go over the general behavior and strategies to defeat the various bosses found in Devil May Cry.
The Hunter:
The first boss you encounter is in Mission 1 and he is known as the Hunter. Although this boss is relatively large in size, he is pretty easy to defeat. Your goal is to attack his face and hands to inflict damage. After you have inflicted a certain amount of damage, the Hunter will fall down to his elbow, at this point continue attacking his face and he will fall completely down. While he is completely fallen, he is especially vulnerable to attack.
After you have inflicted a larger amount of damage, the Hunter will jump to a tower in the background and launch his claw towards you. To overcome this period, simply dodge the claws and keep shooting towards his face until he falls.
Periodically throughout the fight, the Hunter will retreat to the edge of the arena and bellow a dark cloud which fogs up the entire arena. The Hunter will mask himself in the cloud and throw his knife towards you. You can continuously dodge his knife until the fog fades or you can hit the knife back towards the Hunter. This is most easily achieved with the
Osiris.
Here is a list of moves that you’ll want to dodge as you fight the Hunter.
Knife Slash: This attack is a horizontal Knife Slash that can attack you while you are in the air or on the ground. We you see him pull his hand back he is preparing to slash so get ready to dodge. If you demon evade you will receive a temporary damage boost.
Knife Stab: During this move, the Hunter will rear his hand upwards and stab vertically towards the ground. Be sure to dodge this attack so you can get a few hits in before the Hunter recovers.
Knife Throw: When the Hunter bellows the dark cloud, he will throw his knife towards you from the shadows. The knife will come either horizontally or vertically. You can either dodge the knife or strike it back towards him.
Knife Jump: This move is rarer, but the Hunter will jump high into the air and come striking towards you. When he lands a shockwave will come out so be ready to jump rather than dodge.
Charging Tackle: On higher difficulties, the Hunter will retreat towards the edge of the arena and hunker down. Rather than releasing the dark fog, the Hunter will charge towards you and knock you over. Oftentimes, he will repeat this move 3-4 times before returning to the center of the arena. You can either dodge this attack or move the edge of the arena and attack him before he charges.
The Succubus:
The second boss you’ll encounter in Devil May Cry is known as the Succubus. You find this boss in Mission 6: The Secret Ingredient. Don’t think about the name of this mission for too long because it can get pretty disgusting. In general, the Succubus will use a lot of swiping attacks that are combined with breath and bile attacks. Most attacks can be dodged or avoided once you learn to identify what each attack looks like.
In the beginning, you’ll start out on seemingly small platform with the Succubus directly in front of you. Fortunately, there are platforms that you can Angel Lift to on both your left and right. You’ll learn that these platforms are exceptionally helpful for dodging the Succubus’ attacks. As you fight the Succubus, you’ll discover that this enemy has 3 life bars that you need to deplete. Upon depleting one life bar, you’ll need to change platforms until you reach a platform which allows you to Demon Pull on of the Succubus’ tubes from the ceiling. Afterwards, you’ll need to quickly change platforms as the Succubus will destroy the current platform out of anger. The fight will continue and after you deplete each life bar you’ll need to Demon Pull another hose from the ceiling.
In terms of attacks, you’ll need to follow a hit and run strategy to inflict damage safely. Most of the Succubus’ attacks are quick and close-ranged which will make a prolonged onslaught from Dante difficult. It is best to use a heavy-hitting weapon such as Eryx, Arbiter, or Rebellion to land a good 3-5 hits in between strikes from the Succubus. You can cause damage to the Succubus by either attacking its head or arms, although it’ll take more damage if you attack the head.
After you the last Demon Pull, the Succubus will try one final attack towards you. You’ll need to travel to a platform towards your right where you will find the Succubus hanging on to the platform. Attack its hand in order to end the fight.
Here is a short list of the attacks you’ll want to watch out for:
Claw Slash: This is a primary attack from the Succubus. The boss will use either it right or left hand to swipe horizontally towards you. You can either dodge this attack or jump over the claw.
Palm Slam: The second primary attack from the Succubus. This attack is used more commonly when you are close to the Succubus. The boss will pick up either a right or left hand and slam it down towards you. You are able to dodge away from this move.
Double-Palm Slam: This move will occur after you have inflicted a moderate amount of damage. The Succubus will raise both hands and slam both fists down. This move takes longer than a standard slam so you should have enough time to either evade or change platforms.
Scream: This move is designed to create space between the Succubus and you. The boss will yell which hits you and knocks you back quite a distance. In order to avoid this attack, either roll backwards or change platforms.
Bile Attack: This is a more difficult attack to dodge. The boss will spray a corrosive bile all over the platform that you are standing on. When this happens you have two options. You can double-jump and try to wait out the take in order to take minimal damage or you can move to another platform. You’ll be able to identify this attack when the boss appears like it is going to puke/hurl.
Bob Barbas:
The next boss you encounter is a little more abstract. Mission 10: Bad News is a boss fight against the news anchor Bob Barbas. In general, this boss is relatively easy to defeat and should not take much once you have learned to identify Barbas’ attach pattern.
The interesting key components to this boss fight are the red/orange nodes that are spread throughout the battlefield. As these nodes appear, you need to use Eryx to smash these nodes which sends a shockwave towards Barbas. After you have destroyed the nodes, you’ll be able to attack and inflict damage. Keep in mind that Bob Barbas will eventually recover so you need to retreat as you start to see a orange circle appear around Barbas. Retreat this pattern until you have defeated him. In order to expedite this process, you can switch into Devil Trigger mode once you have cause Barbas to become vulnerable.
After you have depleted approximately a third of Barbas’ health, an Angel Lift point will appear at his eye and you’ll be transported to another area. You’ll need to defeat the waves of enemies before you can return to finish off the boss. This is a great place in to ratchet up your combo and collect some orbs.
As you return to Bob Barbas, his attacks will speed up and change in variety. Follow the same strategy of smash the nodes and damaging Barbas’ until you can Angel Lift to his other eye. Again, you’ll be transported and required to defeat the waves of enemies before you can return to the boss fight.
At this point, there will be more nodes to smash and the boss will attack even more ferociously than before. Keep following your previous pattern and you’ll have this finished in no time.
As you learn Barbas’ attacks, here is a list of what you can expect:
Purple Lasers: This is most likely the easiest attack to avoid. Three purple lasers will fan out and rotate. The easiest way to dodge them is to simply jump over them.
Green Lasers: For this attack, the boss will spit out a green laser on either side of you that will close in on your position. In order to avoid this attack you can double-jump as the lasers close in. Be careful as these lasers tend to speed up as the fight progresses.
Double-Palm Smash: As you damage Barbas’ he will raise both of his hands and slam them on the arena. This is a fairly slow move which gives you enough time to properly time a dodge if you see the move coming.
Laser Wall: This move is slightly more difficult to avoid. The boss will send out a circular wall of lasers from the center locations. It covers the entire field which makes the move difficult to evade. As the wall closes in, you should spot several green spots in the wall that will allow you to pass unharmed. Be sure to look out for these green spots to avoid damage.
Blue Lasers: Bob Barbas will spit out a tall wall of blue lasers that will rotate briefly. If you are far away from the boss you should be fine. However, if you are close simply run in the direction of the lasers in order to avoid damage.
Mundus’ Spawn:
In Mission 14: Last Dance, you’ll encounter Mundus’ Spawn. This creature has been itching for a while to get Dante’s attention so hopefully you enjoy this boss fight. The fight can be pretty lengthy until you find the best strategy for your play style.
One of the first things you’ll notice is that there are two health bars present during this boss fight. The top bar belongs to Lilith while the bottom bar belongs to the Spawn. Right now, only the Spawn is visible since Lilith was absorbed into the Spawn. This fight is unending until you have completely depleted Lilith’s health. In order to expose Lilith, you’ll have to Demon Pull her out of the Spawn once you have depleted the Spawn’s health bar. It is highly recommended that switch into Devil Trigger in order to inflict the most damage possible to Lilith.
As mentioned earlier, you must deplete the Spawns health before you can attack Lilith, which can be slightly difficult. Any standard attack will inflict damage; however, there are key parts on his body you can attack that will inflict more damage. First, there is an Angel Lift point on the left side of the body which you can use to close in and inflict aerial damage. After you have inflicted a moderate amount of damage, his Third eye will open. At this point you can inflict major amounts of damage by attack the eye.
The third eye will open and close throughout the fight so it is important that you pay attention to when it opens and closes. During certain times, the Spawn will try to cover his weak points with his hands. In these moments, it is better to stay back and wait for the Spawn to become vulnerable again.
The attacks for Mundus’ Spawn are more difficult to predict and dodge than previous bosses. Here is a list of what you can expect:
Shockwaves: This is an irritating attack that the boss will use frequently. The Spawn will pound the floor which sends Shockwaves barreling towards Dante. You’ll need to double jump and possibly Angel Boost out of the way to avoid damage. As the fight progresses, the Spawn will add more shockwaves per attack.
Punch: This is a standard punch attack that the boss will use when you are attack his sides. It is quick and very close-ranged so be prepared to dodge backwards when you see the Spawn raise his hand.
Phase-shift: The Spawn as the ability to phase in and out of sight. Normally, he’ll come out of the phase and swipe or charge towards you. This move is less frequent if you stay close to the Spawn and attack him constantly.
Fist Sweep: This is one of the more powerful and frequent attacks from the Spawn. The boss will swipe is fist through the air repeatedly and towards your direction. For the most part, these are horizontal strikes that can avoided by jumping or dodging backwards.
Ball Attack: This is a rare attack where the Spawn will launch a ball towards you. This is normally pretty easy to avoid and happens frequently if you are a long-distance from the boss.
Mundus:
Finally in Mission 19: Face of the Demon you’ll encounter Mundus. If you haven’t been paying attention to the story line thus far, this is the big guy that you’ve been after this whole time. You’ll be forced to play through a short scene with Vergil before the fight actually begins.
For this most part, this fight can be pretty easy once you learn how to damage Mundus and to avoid his attacks. During the beginning of the fight you’ll have two building tops that you can alternate between as you fight this boss. This can come in handy as you dodge attacks similar to the boss fight with the Succubus.
After the majority of arm attacks, the arm will linger on top of the building for a short period of time. Luckily for you, the arms have an Angel Lift point so you can pull yourself towards the arm in order to inflict damage. Simply dodge the attacks and pull yourself towards the arms until you deplete the health for both arms.
Once each arm has been defeated, you’ll need to pull out one of Mundus eyes. Since both of the arms are defeated, Mundus will only attack with the Meteor attacks which can be dodged or reflected back towards Mundus. When he leans forward to scream, Angel Lift yourself towards Mundus to deplete the final health bar. Afterwards the battle is over, most likely a lot quicker than you expected.
Here are the attacks you’ll need to dodge in order to defeat Mundus:
Fist Smash: This is one of the most frequent moves. Mundus simply smashes the building you are on, usually more than once at a time. It is easy to predict where the fists will land so you just need to dodge out of the way.
Double-Fist Smash: This is the move which leaves Mundus vulnerable. He’ll raise both arms up and pound the building with both fists simultaneously. Double-jump to avoid the move then Angel Lift yourself to one of the fists in order to inflict damage.
Lava Flow Attack: With this move, Mundus will pound the side of the building which will cause lava to pour out. You can jump over the lava and Angel Lift to the arm in order to inflict damage or you can travel to the other building.
Lava Breath: This attack is fairly simple to predict. Mundus will gather energy for a moment and then breath lava onto the building you are standing on. This is when you’ll need to change buildings in order to avoid damage.
Meteor Shot: Mundus will pull back his arm and shoot a Meteor towards your location. Most times, you can dodge this Meteor or launch it back towards him in order to inflict some damage.
Meteor Rain: This is the move that Mundus will use when he no longer has any arms to attack with. He’ll cause three Meteors to rain down towards you at the same time. Unlike the previous move, they are not launched directly towards your location so it is easier to dodge the moves.
Vergil:
You may be wondering why there is one last mission left for you after you have defeated the main antagonist of the game. If you are knowledgeable of the Devil May Cry series, you won’t be surprise to find that in Mission 20: The End, your enemy is Vergil.
This fight will likely be the most difficult boss fight in the entire game, and rightfully so consider it is the last fight. Vergil will block the majority of your attacks so you’ll need to focus on inflicting damage through counterattacks. This means that it will be imperative that you learn to read Vergil’s moves and become an expert with counterattacks and evasive maneuvers.
Let’s examine some of the moves that you’ll be on the lookout for:
Summoned Swords: This is a ranged attack from Vergil where he will summon swords above him and launch them towards you. For the most part, you can avoid these swords easily through running sideways or dodge rolls. It is important to know that Vergil will perform other attacks while his swords are summoned so you’ll need to pay attention to when they launch. As the fight progress, Vergil will summon more swords per attack.
Rapid Slash: You’ll be able to see this attack come as Vergil hunkers down and prepares to unsheathe the Yamato. He will phase towards you and leave a shock wave of sword slashes behind him. As you see him launch towards you, be prepared to roll out of the way to avoid damage.
Stomp: For this attack, Vergil will teleport above you and stomp downwards. This is a great move to counterattack and land a few hits before he recovers.
Blade Throw: This attack will take on two varieties: Airborne and grounded. In the air, Vergil will simply launch a spinning blade towards you. On the ground, Vergil will launch three. This move can be dodged if time correctly and Vergil is generally vulnerable to attack afterwards if you are quick.
Starfall: You may recognize this attack from Devil May Cry 3, where Vergil teleports upwards and launches towards you diagonally. You can dodge away from his kick and land a few hits on Vergil afterwards.
Judgment Cut: In this attack, Vergil will gather energy, unsheathe his Yamato, and deliver a sphere of cuts towards you. This is a close-far distance attack that generally homes in on your locations. Be sure to move constantly in order to avoid damage from this attack.
Doppelganger: This move is quite possibly one of the most difficult to overcome. As Vergil’s health lowers, he will create a clone that will follow his moves and continuously attack you. During this times, you’ll need to defeat the clone as quickly as possible in order return back to fighting Vergil. Towards the very end of the fight, Vergil will hunker down and recover health while his clone attacks you. At these moments it is imperative that you defeat the clone as quickly as possible or else this fight will last much longer than necessary.
Alright! Congratulations! If this is your first play through, you’ve unlocked a few trophies along the way. If not, great job on beating the game multiple times. As usual, if you have any questions feel free to ask.
