Sony's partnership with this streaming service seems like a great way to have some backwards compatibility. I haven't seen Microsoft announce anything as a counter to this. There hasn't been much talk of backwards compatibility at all, and no reference to a way to top Sony's offering.

I think that now that Onlive has gone under Microsoft could inexpensively purchase the remains of the company and create a good alternative to Gaikai. They don't necessarily have to push it too much, just have it as a backup plan in case Sony's Gaikai is a huge success.

What do you guys think?

Well, they definitely have the ability to counter it, but I guess they don't really care at the moment because Gaikai hasn't really shown its true potential yet. Maybe if Gaikai becomes a huge deal they will attempt to counter-attack with their own similar service.

Gaikai wont even be out until 2014. MSFT Live has been their baby since the beginning and know it like the back of their hand. This service is something they just bought and are just bolting it onto their system. But we shall see I guess.

Got to be honest, i didn't knew that Gaikai was before searching for it. I guess people think this is something good to use? Who knows, it could be the next Youtube, where it gets blown out of proportions and everyone in the world uses it.

Not sure what you mean about it "being the next YouTube". Gaikai is a game streaming service. It's basically backwards compatibility.

I think Polygon (website) rumored Xbox One being able to do game streaming (for backwards compatibility), but I can't find the link. Still just a rumor though.

Technically Microsoft could do it with the Azure/Cloud, but whether or not they want to is another story. Maybe they have something better in mind for backwards compatibility.

That is if they can do it. As far as we know the only thing they have shed light on is they are exploring ways to do it. Like Landshark said, Im sure MSFT could do it also, but if they want to is another story.

I honestly don't think that Microsoft will do as much of a good job as Gaikai. But who knows, once one console does something, the others seem to follow. So Xbox One might get something very similar to it. In my opinion, Xbox One is falling behind.

Or they would have done it... MS has a history though of copying the competition and even improving in some cased. The thing with Gaikai is nobody knows how it will perform. I am excited about Gaikai though, imagine having the entire legacy catalog at your fingertips. Especially if they just charge a sub for it. If Gaikai works then MS will have to respond.

Which every company does. BUT like you said the good thing is sometimes companys can improve it more.

I think they will release popular last gen games they same way they did with the 360, but I doubt any streaming capabilities...at least any time soon.

Yeah that's what I think will happen. I know MSFT said they have no plans for it but if it happens well on PS4 then they can probably do it.

Microsoft had a partnership with a similar service called Agwi (at least I think that's the name). But I've heard so little about it after the initial reveal of it I'm not even sure the deal exists anymore.
