Xbox 360 Does the side you're on decide what weapons you can use?

I'm a relatively new player to the game (just as BF4 comes out lol) but I've noticed some times I can start with the AK-12 and other times I can use the M16. Is this due to what side I am playing on? I believe this is the case but would like some assertion before I accept it as fact. Thanks!

Until you get a service star in each class, yes. But it only matters for the default weapons in each class.

Ex. Until you get your assault service star, you can't use the M16A3 as a Russian and vice versa for the AK12 as US. The last unlock for each class is the other sides starting weapon.

Level up in the game and play more for every class. By the time you unlock service stars in a specific class, all the faction specific weapons will be unlocked on the opposing faction as well, so don't worry about having a favourite weapon on one side because you can use it on the other team as well (as long as you play the game enough and have leveled up to unlock them for the other team). Basically what Robert Harp said is entirely true.
