Halo 4: Armor Ability Strategy Guide

If you plan to play Halo 4 without using any armor abilities, I can tell you only one thing – you are CRAZY! Those are THE things that will not only make your gameplay more interesting but will also change the way you see the game. There are lots of modifications that you will have to deal with but it is always better to be on the safe side and know a bit more about every modification, specialty, its possibilities, pros and cons. And what is better timing than now to get acquainted with Halo 4 Armor Abilities?
But before we get closer to the point, you need to remember that modifications can be bought for Spartan Points which you gain only with the progress you make. In other words: the faster you level up – the faster you will become a better warrior.

THRUSTER PACK
halo-4-thruster-pack.png

Designation: M805X Forward Acceleration System/Fulcrum Mitigating
Manufacturer: Lethbridge Industrial
Thruster Pack is a lot like the Evade ability from “Reach” but unlike “Evade”, Thruster Pack does not allow you to cover great distances. However, it doesn’t mean that this armor ability is not worth to be in the arsenal. Just on the contrary: in proper hands Thruster Pack can be turned into a perfect saving strategy. Moving fast on short distances in one on one battle can actually save your life and avoid the fatal outcome. In other words – you can run away, recover and then fight back or even use it for attacking from different sides.
Pros
- With the help of Thruster Pack you can quickly get closer to the target and if you are using a shotgun – shoot it in the close range. This is definitely an amazing way to get things done and finish the enemy.
- By all means you can and even should use Thruster Pack as a perfect method to get away from bad guys and get behind the cover. This will come in handy in those critical situations when you are very low on health and need to recover. Save your Thruster Pack for later and when you reach the point of becoming vulnerable – simply move somewhere safe and recover your health, reload and get back in the battle. By the way – if you come across Time Missions, this can actually save your life and help you reach the finish line a bit faster.
- One of the obvious uses for the Thruster Pack is dashing away from the incoming grenades. When you see a grenade indicator – dash away into a different direction and save your character’s life. Also, this will work with other dangerous things that are about to happen at a certain place. So, just remember to keep your fingers ready for Thruster Pack.
- The last but definitely not the least positive things about the Thruster Pack is that it can help you to turn the game into your own terms. Well, the strategy is all up to you but with a proper attitude and proper thinking you can not only survive the battle but actually become a valuable soldier performing critical hits and dashing away in a blink of an eye.
Cons
The con is, actually, not about the ability itself but about the way it’s given to a player. When you use the Thruster Pack, for some unknown reason the game pops into a third-person view. While I do enjoy playing third-person shooters, at a certain point it gets annoying and even with all the usefulness it brings, it quickly starts to feel unnecessary and disorienting. But, probably, some of you will enjoy the trick, so let’s consider this con to be a neutral one.

HARDLIGHT SHIELD
468px-Hardlight_Shield.png

Designation: Z-90 Photonic Coalescence Emitter/Aegis
Manufacturer: Unknown/Forerunner Origin
The Hardlight Shield is an interesting addition to your armor abilities and again – if you do everything right – it might become a real helper and savior. It appears for a few seconds mostly giving you enough time to get behind the cover or wait for a proper moment to strike back. The great thing about this shield is that not only can it absorb but it also deflects incoming bullets or missiles which is kind of cool.
Pros
- No matter what kind of weapon you are shot with – Hardlight Shield will still be able to absorb or deflect it and if you are dealing with some powerful opponents with great weapons or even military vehicles – you’ll still have no problems staying alive as long as the shield is up at the moment.
- Hardlight Shield can deflect shots fired at you and with a proper angle you can actually make the missile turn around and hit the target shooting at you. It won’t be easy but, probably, with some practice and some potential you can get things done and even become a hero. However, you won’t get any medals or bonuses for this trick.
- A person using a Hardlight Shield can actually turn into a tank and if none from your team is using it, you can lead the squad and be the first to turn around the corner. First of all – your shield will protect you, so there is no need to worry about the bullets flying in your direction. Secondly – even if the resistance is really tough, you will have about 5 seconds to take a look around and get back behind the cover sharing enemies’ position with your teammates.
- It won’t be easy, but with a perfect timing and strategy you can activate your shield and force your enemy to fire all the ammo. When he’ll start reloading – deactivate the shield and shoot him.
Cons
- Hardlight Shield lasts only for 5 seconds and frankly speaking – this is not a lot. At the same time, if the Hardlight Shield would have lasted longer, the game will turn out to be not well balanced. But still – a bit more than 5 seconds would have been better.
- It takes about 10 seconds for Hardlight Shield to reload and 8 seconds to do the very same thing with some additional tools. This is not a lot but more than enough to be killed.
- Unfortunately, Hardlight Shield does not protect you from any other impacts coming from Warthogs, Gauss Hog, Scorpion and pretty much any other vehicle. Well, just keep that in mind.
- You can’t do anything when using the shield. Even running is not available. You can simply walk slowly which can turn out to be fatal.
- Your enemies also see when your shield is about to disappear. If you won’t be able to take behind the cover – there is a great possibility that you will end up dead.
- Hardlight Shield has a very little clink near the ground and pretty much any grenade can slip in it. Well, with a lucky throw your enemy can send a grenade under your shield and kill you even with the protection turned on. Not the best opportunity ever.

AUTOSENTRY
H4-AutoSentry-Deployment.jpg

Designation: Z-2500 Automated Protection Drone
Autosentry is a very interesting ability of your armor and it can actually become very helpful if you use it right. Autosentry is a little bot that can shoot at the bad guys. When placed in a proper spot, it can bring some serious damage to your opponents, notify you that someone is approaching or cover your back when you are busy doing something else. However, it is not strong enough to kill enemies (well, only if they are week and do not shoot back).
Pros
- Autosentry shoots at everything that is hostile and moves and if you want a guardian – this is exactly what you might be looking for.
- Autosentry is no good at long distances but its range of detection is far better than yours. So, when someone is approaching even from the long distance, your bot can be very helpful and notify you about the danger.
- In online missions Autosentry might turn into a great helper, especially when your task is to protect the flag or something like this. At the close range Autosentry is more than effective and even if it won’t keel the bad guy – it will definitely make him suffer.
- When playing a single player you might not find it extremely useful but to a certain point on Legendary difficulty and during intense battles another shooter will be very useful.
Cons
- The most vulnerable moment of using Autosentry is the moment of its release. When you plant the Autosentry, you can’t do anything else and anyone who sees you will definitely try to eliminate your character. Obviously, this works the other way round but that does not save the situation. So, before making THE move, make sure that none’s around or, at least, ask your teammate to cover you.
- Autosentry is a simple bot and his life line is not the longest one. Well, it can take a couple of shots but only if they are shot from a pistol or something alike. Anything else will simply blow it apart.
- It shoots but it shoots slowly. Of course, that’s better than nothing but not as good as it could have been.
- Autosentry is a static bot and it won’t move around or after you. You choose a place and set it there. Now the little guy simply secures the area and shoots at anything that is hostile and in the fire range.

JET PACK
SOLACE_Jet.jpg

Well, Jet Pack is a Jet Pack and its functionality is pretty self-explanatory: it helps you to cover distances faster and get to the places that sometimes can’t be reached without additional help or additional abilities. It also allows you to attain greater heights and change your position on the map quickly and unpredictably.
Pros
- Jet Pack gives you an amazing plus to mobility and you can actually profit a lot from using it in proper situations. You can use it whatever you like as long as it brings some strategy inconveniences to your opponents.
- With the help of Jet Pack you can extend your jump. Let us say you were planning to jump over the edge and land on the other side but you hit the jump button too early and now you are about to disappear in the middle of nowhere. With the help of your Jet pack you can fly up and reach the other side successfully. Also, if the other side is simply too far from you and you need to be there, press jump and then activate your Jet Pack. This should save Jet Pack charge for some other useful activity.
- Jet Pack will help you to change your position on the map quickly and unpredictably. Things like that confuse enemies and when they can’t take a clear shot on you, you can take a clear shot on them.
- Using Jet Pack you can get to the places that are simply restricted for those who do not have this armor ability. For example, you can find a proper sniping position or you can simply get to the place where none will find you.
- Attacking enemies from the above is definitely the most amazing strategy ever. Not only you get a possibility to appear unnoticed but also you can strike suddenly and bring “Death from Above.” Also, you'll have a nice view of their heads for potential headshots!
- You can suddenly appear on the battlefield as well as disappear from it looking for cover and leaving the bad guys behind. Jet Pack to avoid lethal outcome!
Cons
- Jet Pack does not provide its owners with the unlimited amount of gas which also means – you won’t be able to get too far. There are also spots that seem to be reachable but actually happen to be beyond your flying possibilities.
- Inappropriate usage of a Jet Pack can cause death but it is not a jetpack what lets you down but a strategy failure.

ACTIVE CAMOUFLAGE
activecamo.jpg

Another great armor ability is known as Active Camouflage and man – I like it so much! Of course, it is not for everyone but in proper hands it can actually become a perfect killing strategy. When on – it makes you invisible and only if a person stands in front of you and tries to figure out if you are there, only then you might be seen. In all the other cases you can feel safe for yourself. However, things are not simple: every time you kill or shoot someone – you expose yourself. Also, when you move fast your camouflage won’t work and other players will see you anyway.
Pros
- The best thing about Active Camouflage is that you get invisible and it is nearly impossible to spot you unless you open fire. A soldier can only dream about getting invisible on a battlefield.
- If you walk carefully and do not shoot in all directions, you can stay invisible almost forever!
- Active Camouflage is a perfect armor ability for a sniper. Even despite the fact that you will be exposed to the enemy in a moment of shooting, you will still get invisible after which means – you will be a hard target to get.
- Because of the Active Camouflage you will appear as a swarm of friendly targets on a map. Of course, your enemies can check the place and if they don’t see what’s expected, they will start shooting. But, as far as you are invisible, you can get away without being noticed. At least – you can try to. It is still better than a motion tracker covered in red.
- If you want to remain invisible, move as careful as possible and shoot only when you really have to. Every time you shoot or perform a hit you will expose yourself. The strategy for using Active Camouflage can be different starting with a sniper position and finishing with melee attacks.
Cons
- This is a very special kind of ability and not every player will appreciate it. There are those who seek for action and those who enjoy doing it slowly but with style. If you are the first one – don’t even bother getting it for your character. But, if you plan to play as a sniper or as a silent killer on the battlefield – this is your kind of thing.
- Ironically, Active Camouflage makes you less active. In order to keep it working you will be forced to play carefully and move slowly.
- When you turn on your ability, your spot will appear as a swarm of friendly targets on a map. This also means that your enemies will know where you’ve been before and will try to cover this place with grenades or get you with a lucky shot.

PROMETHEAN VISION
promethean-vision.jpg

Designation: Z-5080 Short-Range Spectrum Augmenter/Vision
Manufacturer: Unknown/Forerunner Origin
This is definitely one of my favorite armor abilities and I would give a lot to have one in a real life but, so, far, I can only enjoy it while playing Halo 4. The main thing about Promethean Vision is that it allows you to see enemies through the walls. If they happen to be in range, they will simply be lightened up with red. Here’s how it works: when you activate your Promethean Vision, it sends a sonar-like wave from your view. It flows out and identifies any living creature. Lots of gamers rely on this ability and use it very and very often. At the same time there are those who consider Promethean Vision to be a legal way of cheating. Well, to some extend it kind of is but none forbids your opponents to use it as well.
Pros
- Unlike the regular radar on your left, Promethean Vision gives you a lot better understanding of your opponent, direction he is going to move next and walls he is behind. Being lighten up with red you can easily spot your opponent and follow him waiting for a perfect shot. This is not force but knowledge that will help you to make things right.
- There are players that enjoy rating and sniping from very uncomfortable positions giving you not that great perspective of being killed every time you appear around the corner. Well, with the help of Promethean Vision you can smoke them out or, at least, distract with your crazy running and kill the bad guy who spoils all the fun.
- Not only Promethean Vision highlights your enemies but also their weapons and grenades turn red too. As a matter of fact – this is really helpful and when grenades are thrown at you – you can easily dash away using Thruster Pack or whatever you think is appropriate.
- While Promethean Vision does not last long, you can make the fun last longer with the help of Tactical Package AA Efficiency.
Cons
- Promethean Vision does not last long but you can save the situation with the help of Tactical Package AA Efficiency. This will increase the rate that Promethean Vision recharges. But still it won’t last forever –just a bit longer.
- One of the cons that I actually considered to be annoying for the first few times turned out to be OK later but newbies and those who can’t get used to the fast change of events will definitely hate it. The very same second you start using Promethean Vision, the world around you turns blue, your enemies become red and your allies, if any, turn green. This is not fatal but can be disorienting at first.
- One of the biggest cons is that when using Promethean Vision you expose yourself to the others and your enemies also know where you are. Well, they have no idea about your future plans but they, at least, know where you should be expected from. This means that you can’t just stand and wait for the bad guys to expose themselves – you need to act and act fast.

HOLOGRAM
Halo-4-hologram-600x337.jpg

Designation: T-27 Responsive Holographic Form Emulator
Manufacturer: Materials Group
This is another great armor ability that should become handy in your day by day Halo 4 struggle. The Hologram creates a soldier that looks exactly like you and being distracted with it, your opponent is likely to start shooting at the decoy giving you a great possibility to flank and illuminate him without being noticed.
Pros
- A proper usage of Hologram can actually change the outcome of the battle and fool other player or players even despite their awareness of you having a Hologram. You see: when you start using your Hologram ability, for a short moment you disappear from the map and the other moment your Hologram but not you appears on the opponent’s radar. If you’re doing everything right – there is no way someone can come out clean and alive from this strategically perfect move.
- The only rule about sending a Hologram is very simple: you have to be sure that your opponent hasn’t noticed you spreading up and sending a fake you. Otherwise – your strategy won’t work.
- You can also use your Hologram as a permanent shield. Not a bad strategy is to send a fake you a few steps in front to the open area and when someone starts shooting at it, be ready to appear from around the corner and send a bullet in his head. Or, you can simply run after your Hologram and shoot from behind when your enemy concentrates his fire on it. And the last but not the least trick: your Hologram can become your savior. When you’re low on ammo or low on health and you see that enemies are approaching, send a Hologram. First of all – it will take a couple of shots before it disappears. Secondly – it will protect you for a couple of seconds from danger while you’ll be recovering your health or reloading your gun.
- This feature is actually my favorite and true gamers will definitely understand. Aim the Hologram at the heads of enemy corpses and they'll automatically teabag them. I do believe that comments here are totally unnecessary.
Cons
- While the Hologram looks really amazing and true-to-life, some players don’t fall for it. But this is not about the Hologram – it’s about the experienced players.

REGENERATION FIELD
halo_4_regeneration_field_by_uhzenostrom117-d5ddmfu.png

Regeneration Filed gives you an amazing opportunity to stay longer on the battlefield and help others to regenerate their health. It comes in a form of a big green bubble and regenerates your health as well as the health of those who step into it. However, the future outcome really depends on proper timing and proper placement.
Pros
- Regeneration Field deploys a wave that pushes your opponents away which gives you an opportunity to regenerate safely.
- Regeneration Field recovers your health and thanks to the green bubble that covers pretty big territory around you, it also regenerates health to those soldiers standing in it.
- Regeneration Field also works as defensive weapon and for a certain period of time you will be protected from all kinds of bullets flying in your direction.
Cons
- Regeneration Field works both ways and when you are regenerating – so are your enemies. Well, fair or not but if you want to save yourself or your team members from dying and set Regeneration Field right near enemy – don’t be surprised with his recovered health and a bullet in your head.
- Obviously, you can’t use it very often or run with it on the field healing yourself and others.
In general, Regeneration Field is a great skill and I would definitely recommend having it in your team. But, as for the usage – do not try to set it whenever you think you need. The best places are those where you stand with a team and hold a position or, for example, protecting the flag. Very often using Regeneration Field at a perfect moment can help you and your team to win the battle.
