I bought a new basic slim console in 2011, but it didn't come with a hard drive. If I remember correctly, the hard drive that I bought was from the Amazon marketplace and was labeled as new. Unfortunately, this means that there was no particular warranty on it, and the warranty on the console didn't cover hard drives that were bought separately. The one I bought died on me quite suddenly roughly 8 months after I bought it. This was right before Mass Effect 3 came out, and so I had a month to scrape together money for a new hard drive so I could play it. That was one of the only games I've ever pre-ordered and I didn't want to have to wait to play it after spending so much money on it.

Anyway, I was able to get my data off the old drive with a transfer cable that I bought. I was surprised but also greatly relieved that my information was still intact, since I assumed that I would have to start from scratch. I don't know why it died on me, but I'm kind of worried that it will happen again sometime. Has anything like this ever happened to anyone else?

No, I've never had any hard drive problems. You just may have gotten unlucky. Why didn't you ask for a refund?

I do not own the slim version, but I have not ever had any issues with the HD on my standard version. It's a shame that there was no warranty on it, I think you can buy replacements though fairly cheaply if you look around online.

Never had a single HD problem with the slim, but I did have a problem with the old 360 classic. I had a hard drive fail out on me, it flat out died. I put it in a HD array I have to see if it was the Xbox and nope, was a clicking drive (failure sound clicks).

If I remember correctly, I bought it from a private seller on the Amazon marketplace. I don't remember who it was exactly, but I don't think they had a return policy past 30 or 60 days. It definitely should have lasted longer than that, though, but I suppose it's too late to do anything about it. I had contacted Microsoft directly; that's how I found out that they didn't cover the warranty on the hard drive if it was bought separately.
