I've read news about it that you can change the stock hdd. I'm wondering if anyone's done it and is it worth it seeing that opening it up will most definitely void the warranty. The stock hdd really is lacking in terms of space and performance. Unless Microsoft is going to patch external hdd support, this method is really tempting right now.

I remember Major Nelson mentioning that support for external storage wouldn't be supported at launch so since he worded it so specifically I'd assume that'd mean that they'll add support for it later. There isn't enough out for it anyway that'll fill it up so at the moment we're good and voiding the warranty on the first few waves of a brand new console might not be the greatest idea since well...if something out of your control happens then you're kinda boned in fact you could say you got *takes off sunglasses* xboned.....

EDIT: found a ign article/vid of some dude replacing one http://ca.ign.com/articles/2013/12/04/replacing-xbox-one-hard-drive-makes-it-run-faster-modder-shows

*Note* I haven't watched it as the guys voice annoys me...

If external harddrive will eventually be supported then I'll wait and see how it goes. I just hope that the update will be released before the harddrive is full and I have to start deleting stuff off of it. From the video, it seems that the Xbox One and PS4 work the same way I don't get why Microsoft don't let people swap out the harddrive.

Well they don't let you change the hard drive because they can make money out of it. They can charge you more for the newer consoles with more storage, making it an incentive so you would buy it. Also I don;t see much reason to have an external drive yet since there isn't much content out there yet.

I hope Microsoft aren't going to do something like the Vita by releasing specific first party storage device for the Xbox One like only Microsoft licensed USB will work on it. The 360s harddrive had this limitation but hackers got to it.

idk.. the "performance" is fine.... the storage is decent at launch.. its in suit with other consoles.

microsoft has already said it will support 3rd part external hd's... and id about bet money it will release a 1t hd in a few years... right now u can "max out" storage but your talking about downloading and buying most every app/game on the market to date..

hear is my problem with people wanting a "better hd"
the style of hd used is tried and true. the general issue rate of the hd itself is basically 0... going to a 1tb is still a bit pricey and price was already an issue with ps4 cheaper..
a hybrid sshd while being faster still has some known issues.. if xb1's started arching due to hd's it would be labled another rrod issue ... we all know what that would mean for xb1's
a true sshd has issues and are known.. the top of the line ones do have less issues but your talking the price of an xb1 for a real performance sshd

but really the performance of a hd is very minimal.. it comes down to ram and processing power. i think the xb1 does a killer job out of the box with all the technology it offers as a day 1 launch. i expect more patches/updates and content. but thats in due time. look at the user interface and how its streamline.

as microsoft learns the system and how to optamize it we will see patches that speed up the use. its already very stable which was more of a concern. give it time. they have allot to come and the external hd situation will be worked out..

Maybe once the Xbox One has been out longer, you will be able to find already modified larger HD's on Ebay
like you can for TiVo's. Then you just swap it out.

I bought a 3tb HD to upgrade one of my TiVos off Ebay and it even came with the tools and step by step
instructions needed to install it.

I have changed the HDD in my 360 slim/elite many times, and I'm pretty sure they're still interchangeable in the one. Does it have screws anywhere?

I've not seen any videos of people taking apart the Xbox One yet but common guess is that there will be screws to hold the hdd in place. I wonder what kind of format does the hdd use, if the console will format it automatically.

Same here, no videos or anything about changing the hard drive. But I guess they'll have an option soon about having an external disc for it.
