Xbox One I'm slightly concerned with all the hacking

Of course we know that hackers just can't help themselves and for whatever reason their doing it, either to help those that play pirated games on their consoles, to prove that they can, or for other less savory purposes there are a ton of reports online about the fact that hackers are making a considerate effort to get into the PS4 and Xbox One, which some have and some haven't. The problem is if they get into user information.

Piracy isn't something we can stop completely. Not unless we can stop it world wide. The thing is hacking is a concern of most of us. I just hope they don't get anything from hacking Xbox One or other consoles. Like maybe hack into the camera. It wouldn't feel nice if you have your video posted online without your knowledge.

I am not concerned at all. Even if someones CC information is stolen, at most, they are only responsible for $50 and usually
its nothing if they can prove it was stolen/hacked.

I had my iTunes account hacked before and there were charges from China on there. I called my bank, they reversed everything right away and sent me a form to fill out.

There's a ton of bad information floating around out there. Unfortunately people who write articles online sometimes have no clue about the technology.

The consoles aren't really being "hacked". What people do is through some other means (usually through PC) is to steal your xbox live username and password.

MS has some good info on their site:

http://support.xbox.com/en-US/browse/my-account/security

Also, there are some (maybe not so obvious) things people can do to prevent your account from being stolen:

-Don't ever use the same password from Xbox Live for anything else. Lots of outside services get hacked and passwords get stolen. Adobe was a big one recently where e-mail addresses and passwords were stolen. If you were lazy and use the same password for anything important, you're in serious trouble. (My password for my Adobe account was simple and got people access to nothing important)

-Use a good, secure password. You don't need to enter in your password to sign on your console. Use a longer password that is not simple to guess. Passwords I use for places like here are very simple, while my Live password is not.

-Never, ever submit your username and password to any site you don't know (the "free xbox live points" scams).

-Try to keep your credit card info off your Live account (unfortunately this seems to be a challenge - I ordered my Xb1 from MS and now my CC is back on my account)

-Keep your PC secure (at least any one you use to access your Live account). Run frequent malware scans (malwarebytes works great). Use your router's security features.

Account security is very important. If you secure your account through normal means, you should be safe from most attacks.

You just have to take precautions and make sure that your account is as safe as possible. Anything beyond that falls directly on the company you're using and not really much can be done.

Remember that PSN incident years ago? Yeah, there's a lot that can happen. You'll just have to keep your account safe and sound as always. There's nothing much we can do if people can hack into the systems like it was nothing at all. Make some complex password or something. But always know that we're taking a bit of a risk when we make these accounts.

What did happen regarding PSN years ago ?

Sony offered PSN users two free games from a list. I didn't have a PS3 at the time, so I wasn't affected. But in anycase, I did get the games Oldman Jr. got via PS PLUS months ago so no worries.

As for what happened, it was like this: apparently, hackers were able to break through Sony's security wall, and through that, many PSN users' information were hacked. That one caused an outage, where the PSN was inaccessible for months. It could''ve been even a year apparently. So you could imagine that many couldn't go online to play or even buy online. It was a nightmare for many. But at least Sony fixed it up months later, and there hasn't been another outage since.

What creed4life said. Yes, that PSN outage was one horrific event for all PS players. Many of my friends were concerned their data was hacked, and were pissed off they couldn't go online for months. At least now it's not like that anymore. Let's hope microsoft doesn't experience that 'cuz it would be like hell on Earth if it happens to them.

wow, crazy stuff.
Its cool PSN offered two free games but i suppose they kind of had to.

It still amazes me that the whole Sony hacking thing was not the PR nightmare it should have been. As soon as PSN came back up, everyone forgot about it and only question security on the MS side of things.

The amazing thing is the "exploit" used against Sony was a very obvious and simple thing that any 1st year programmer knows not to do (sql injection). It was no sophisticated attack, it was a simple thing that anyone could learn how to do in 5 minutes (and everyone on the IT side knows never to leave that hole open... except Sony).

Still, bad things like this only happen once. Companies scramble to fix those issues and make sure they don't happen again.

All of the freedoms we have will perpetuate piracy of media for as long as that freedom exists, and if you are not someone who likes the concept in particular, it is just a simple matter of not doing it or not being tempted to do it, though normally, and for things like soundtracks on youtube and such, it can actually help the artists and developers by garnering more fans, hence channels like VEVO that upload whole music videos there now.

As far as the PS4 goes, Sony should hire better security analysts (if they have any at all) otherwise events like the incident a few years ago will inevitably repeat themselves at some point in the future. All it takes is one overlooked hole any vaguely experienced programmer with too much time on their hands can exploit. Still, if you ever suspect your credit card information is stolen, common sense says to contact your credit card company with the issue. Only fools on long, long road into debt do not check this on their next statement. They cannot hurt you even if they do gather your information if you are smart enough about it.

I've never personally had an issue where one of my accounts was hacked, except for of course the occasional threat by some kid who's dad just so happens to work for the FBI. But I'm sure we've all had a message like that.

Hacking new technology allows people to learn how big corporations with money and man power put together new gadgets. New technology and ways its used sometimes is born from hackers playing with stuff. But there's also those who take advantage of it and do stuff to ruin the fun for other hackers. Some companies pay money to hackers to break stuff and show them how it was done so they can prevent it from happening again.

People who hack online ranked games and ruin the game for others are the kind of people who shouldn't be hacking, but if it helps fix problems with the game then I don't see a problem with it.

lol I've had those. That would've been the best use of that dad's FBI powers, apparently  Other than that harrowing experience, I've never had an account hacked.

I actually went back to Xbox.com and added a security proof to my account. I set it up so that anytime a new device (PC, X1, etc) tries to access my account, I need my username and password, plus they text a code to my phone that I also have to enter. So, even if someone does get my username and password and tries to log in from somewhere else they still need the code from my phone. Once you enter the code once on your particular X1 it remembers you do you don't have to do it every time.

It is pretty simple to set up and for those looking for a little extra piece of mind, it is certainly worth a few minutes. If your credit card number is saved on your account, it is probably a good idea. The only thing is I'm not sure how it works for mobile stuff with smartglass.

Good idea. I'll keep this in mind. Yeah, at least there are ways to keep info safe. None of those hackers will be able to get it at least. But it's also a good idea as well to have a plan in case the info does get compromised too. That plan though... still trying to find a way how to do that,.

I have a separate credit card that I use only for XBL. I purposely have a very low limit (couple hundred bucks) on it so that even if it DOES get stolen, they can't run up some huge debt. I do the same thing for making purchases at gas pumps.....separate low limit card. With all the ways banks can get you your cash back it may be over kill on my part, but it makes me feel better!!
