Xbox 360 Kinect - a great idea with poor support?

Man, when Kinect was first announced, I was excited. What an incredible idea it was and, with all of the quality games on Xbox 360, I knew it wasn't going to be doomed to the pointless motion games that the Wii suffered from. Or was it?

Kinect had some great ideas. Rise of Nightmares was a decent early offering - I still play it to this day. YooStar 2 was incredibly fun once you figured out how to do some good camera tricks, yet it was abandoned so early. There are others, too: Gunstringer, Kinectimals and Dance Central come to mind.

Then the motion control plague began to hit. Developers started copping out, taking the easy route to a quick buck by releasing a bunch of mini-game packs. Even Star Wars Kinect, which could have been an amazing story-filled action game, ended up falling prey to the mini-game curse.

Give me your thoughts on this.

The strange thing about it is that I think what you hear from the internet critics of Kinect are basically hardcore gamers who can't fathom having any kind of motion/voice control in their games. A lot of people that hate Kinect never tried it.

The fact is that there are multiple million seller games for Kinect. So obviously some companies made a lot of money selling Kinect games.

And don't you think Microsoft would have gone to developers way ahead of time and said "Look, we want to include Kinect this time as an integral part of the Xbox One. If we did that, would you support it?". If everyone said no, Microsoft wouldn't have included it.

I think the future is also not "you are the controller". The reason Star Wars Kinect failed (and again it sold 1.39 million worldwide) was because it was on-rails and relied solely on the Kinect. And let's face it, the sensor was limited in what it could do. I would love to see a version with the new Kinect where you could still use the controller to move freely and even use your lightsaber, but be able to use your hand(s) to use your force powers. I'd be ALL OVER THAT. And who knows, MAYBE Battlefront?????

Yea..I remember standing in line for the midnight release. Got 3 games with it as well. Literally played if for a week and it was done. Would not spend any more money on it but I did let the kiddos play Kinect demos hehe.

Personally, I don't think it had poor support. A lot of the games that came out for it, did really well. The developers were serious about making a game for Kinect. The makers of Star Wars, just didn't work hard enough on their implementation. There is no way that Dance Central, Fruit Ninja and the Your Shape games could be spot on with tracking, but for other games, it was all on the Kinect.

yup the only way kinect will actually work is with support from the community that is why their is a huge push on microsofts part on bundling it. if every console gets it developers will use it. its not a numbers game like with 360. every xbox one will have it if you use it or not. but odds are most will at some point.

their was a video i posted in the news/rumor section where adam sessler from rev3 games interviews a hgher up at microsoft. and actually askes him about the 180,drm,cpu,kinect the whole gammet of xbox one storyline launch so far. and one of the things he hits on is how the kinect was lauched 5 years into 360 and why if they want it to grow and become something good/great it needs to be a bundled part of the system. and i agree..

i will leave thise hear in case it dosnt get approved

I suppose so - I bought it thinking it'd be great. You know, like a combination of the Wii and the 360. Sadly not even a 1/10th of the thought that went into most Wii games made it into most Kinect games. There were a couple of good ones, but they generally weren't in my demographic. Like Sesame Street had bar none the best example of a Kinect game - not that I would have known that if I wasn't shopping for little kids. Seriously though in terms of gameplay - the control was lax, the reaction time was pretty bad, and most of the entries really weren't all that interesting. So yeah.

Not even if all the games released for the console supported Kinect would still be a good idea. The concept is there, the technology isn't, and unfortunately you won't be feeling like batman in his batcave with this kind of gadget. Maybe in a few years we have the opportunity to try another go at this.
