Dead Island is only deceptively unique; while I can't say I've played another first-person zombie RPG, it has obvious influences from other games, most notably Diablo. I'm not about to say that games having influence on each other is a bad thing, it's just that when the things done well in a game have been done better, it tarnishes the copycat. Such is the case with Dead Island, and I feel that Diablo's skill tree, loot system/generator, quest structure, etc were better. The gameplay is alright, but could have used more refining. Still, the game is very fun to play with friends, and if you can look past the faults, it's not a bad experience. If you have yet to play a Diablo game, you might even be very impressed.

I'd say this game is in more relation to the play style of Borderlands. If you have ever played that, it has that same feel. When you are dealing with weapons more definitely. Good review on your opinion, I'm very involved with this game and the online community for it!

It sure does. Same with the "active skills". Still, the weapons are only slightly randomized, not as good as Borderlands and the skill trees and active skills are very lacking in my opinion...

Borderlands is itself a Diablo-inspired game, however, I'd say Borderlands is a far better example of blending the Diablo formula with first person gameplay. I'm glad you and others enjoy Dead Island, because Riptide would have never happened without a fanbase for the first game, and I have high hopes that Riptide will fulfill the potential that the original had.
