Major Nelson's blog has a great run down on how achievements on the Xbox One will be progressing into the next generation. Apparently achievements will be cloud powered in order to get developers to involve the gamers in their games and allow users to win prizes. Looks like their adding challeges to the fold that will get users more into games. However you don't get points for doing them. The system has been rebuilt to allow to deliver a more rewarding experience. I'm very interested to see the final product and to see how all this comes together. You guys should check it out, its a great read.

Let’s bring it all home and talk about what you actually see.

  • The Xbox One dashboard experience greatly improves how you discover and view Xbox Live Achievements.
  • Ever wondered how far along you were toward completing an achievement, particularly those that involve a lot of collection or linear progress? With Xbox One, games may now expose your latest progression toward unlocking an achievement right on the dashboard, even before you launch the game.
  • Quickly catch up on what your friends have been up with the achievement activity feed that keeps you informed about your friends’ latest unlocked achievements.
  • Check out video clips of that magical moment when an achievement was unlocked.
  • Easily discover upcoming challenges for a game at any time.
  • Your achievement history has been transformed into a more beautiful gallery of achievement icons that properly show off your hard-earned victories.
You guys all rock, thanks from all of us here on our dev team. Can’t wait to see you on Live!

I think it would be rewarding if they took all the ads off the dashboard. It's bad enough having to pay for Xbox Live, but the least they could do is get rid of all the obnoxious advertising. What was wrong with the old dashboard design, anyway?

considering they're giving every dev team dedicated servers, i'll take the ads. it's called profit maximization. I pay for cable, doesn't mean there aren't commercial breaks.

Well, seems they are going to keep the achievements like they were, but with a few more things.
We are going to be able to transfer the old achievements to the Xbox One, right? Because if not, that would be another bad thing for them.

i heard that everything transfers over so achievements should as well.

It sounds like a decent-enough system; gamerscore was never really solid in my view, because a high gamerscore could simply correlate to playing a large variety of games. The one unfortunate part of this is that if they're cloud-powered, there will no longer be earning achievements offline.

The achievements progress is in the cloud and they can add achievements at any time with the cloud this doesn't mean you can't earn them offline.

Sure, but they're there regardless of whether you're paying for Xbox Live. As long as you're connected to the internet--and I always am--they're there.

Why am I not surprised that Major Nelson announced this? I'm a bit confused as to the points part. Does this mean you won't get any gamerpoints anymore, and will be completely removed? Or will it still stay? Challenges are a really cool addition with achievements, and from what I've heard, they are time based which is pretty awesome!

Achievement progression is an excellent addition. Steam has it and some games have had it inside the game (L4D, for example) and I've always wanted such a thing.
