Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance is the ninth game in the Metal Gear series and is set four years after the events of the series’ last major release: Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots. Released on February 19, 2013 by Platinum Games and Konami, the game follows the cyborg Raiden as he fights to end the threat posed by Desperado Enterprises, a leftover private military company from the time of the war economy.

Rather than focusing on stealth as other Metal Gear games, Revengeance focuses on action. It is a hack and slash action game with a bit of platforming thrown in, and stealth is really an afterthought. You earn points from kills, battles, bosses, and in chests that can be spent to purchase upgrades for Raiden’s weapons and armor, as well as new skills. The game plays very much like the Devil May Cry series, so if you enjoyed the gameplay of those games you will enjoy Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance.

Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance contains 50 achievements equaling 1000 gamer points. The game is not overly difficult in normal mode, and with the ability to jump back and replay missions to pick up missed VR missions there’s nothing you can miss permanently. There are a total 5 truly difficult achievements, listed under the Secret Achievements below (warning: they contain the name of the game’s bosses). You could potentially gather every achievement in the game within 40 hours if you are familiar with hack and slash adventure games. If not, expect to spend 50-60 hours, possibly more, mastering the game’s systems and getting the last 5 achievements.

Playthrough Guide
While you could potentially get all of the achievements in two playthroughs (1 normal or hard, 1 Revengeance), I suggest doing 3 playthroughs with some clean up after. Here’s how I suggest going about the game for the easiest possible way of completing all achievements:

Playthrough 1:
  • Play on Normal difficulty. You’re mainly using this playthrough to enjoy the story and build up a nest egg of points to upgrade everything, as well as grabbing some of the simpler achievements.
  • You’ll get all of the “File… Closed” achievements, most (possibly all) of the kill achievements, and a lot of the chapter special achievements on this playthrough. See below for details, if it does not require a difficulty setting, you can get it here.
Playthrough 2:
  • Play on Hard difficulty. This playthrough you can attempt to get the “A Lover, Not a Fighter” achievement, but the primary goal is the secret achievements that all require Hard difficulty. Each requires that you beat a different boss without taking any damage on Hard difficulty. See below for tips, but these achievements are mostly patience and practice.
Playthrough 3:
  • Play on Revengeance difficulty. Hopefully you have everything in the game with the exception of “Become a Lightning God” by now, because you’re not going to want any distractions here. After two playthroughs you should be familiar with the game’s mechanics, so concentrate on completing every battle as efficiently as possible. See below for more details.
Clean Up:
  • If you’ve missed any achievements this is the time to finish them off. Just replay the File you missed an achievement in and you shouldn’t have a problem. The hardest are the secret achievements and “Become a Lightning God,” so they will likely be the last that you get.

Becoming a Lightning God.jpg
Become a Lightning God (50G)
Complete story mode on Revengeance difficulty with all S rankings.
On the hardest difficulty in the game (Revengeance), you must complete every File with an S rank. This will take a lot of patience and a lot of skill, so be prepared to spend a good deal of time repeating missions and fights. You’ll need to engage every battle, and you’ll need to complete those battles very quickly while taking no damage, including boss fights. I suggest that you watch this video guide. If nothing else, I highly suggest watching through his guide for File R-00, where he explains a lot of what you will need to do to S rank everything. This is by far the hardest achievement in the game. You will want to do this after you’ve collected everything else, because you don’t want to have any distractions as you’re going through this. Complete all 8 Files with an S rank and the achievement is yours.

Steel Tail.jpg
Steel Tail (15G)
Cut off Metal Gear RAY’s metal tail during File R-00.
During File R-00 you will be attacked a couple of times by Metal Gear RAY. Damage the massive Gear, and concentrate on parrying when it attacks with its tail. When you successfully perform a timed counter attack on the tail you will get a chance to perform a Zandatsu to cut the tail off. Successfully perform the Zandatsu and the achievement is yours.

No Flash Photography.jpg
No Flash Photography! (15G)
Destroy all the Gun Cameras in File R-01.
There are 9 gun cameras in File R-01 that you must destroy. They appear as enemies in AR mode, so you can use that to help you spot them. To destroy them you can jump up beside them and attack them, use Blade Mode to chop them in half, or shoot them with rocket launchers. However you chose to destroy them, knock out all 9 and the achievement is yours.

Dwarf Raiden.jpg
Dwarf Raiden (15G)
Incapacitate all the soldiers in File R-02 using a Dwarf Gekko.
There are 5 guards in the sequence of File R-02 in which you control a Dwarf Gekko: three around the base of the area and two on the catwalk. Sneak up behind each of them and press B to electrocute them and knock them unconscious. Once you’ve knocked out all five the achievement is yours.

A Walk in the Dark.jpg
A Walk in the Dark (15G)
Complete the sewer sequence in File R-03 without using AR mode.
This achievement is more annoying than difficult. Do not turn your AR on at any point while in the dark sewers. You can see fairly well when you stand still, and if you get into a fight the area lights up a bit more. Use the mini map to lead the way, and once you reach the end the achievement is yours.

Menace to Society.jpg
Menace to Society (5G)
Cut off the finial at the top of the pagoda in File R-04.
When you reach the Japanese gardens in File R-04 you will see the pagoda in front of you. Run in the front door to the back right corner and use the boxes to jump onto the roof. Next you need to use the hanging lanterns on the corner to jump to the next level. There are four set of lanterns that you will need to jump up. Once you’ve reached the top you’ll see an antenna looking spire in the center of the roof. Jump next to it and use blade mode to slice it in half and the achievement is yours.

Great Escape.jpg
Great Escape (20G)
Complete File R-05 in less than 7 minutes.
The key to this is to avoid every possible fight. Use cardboard boxes or barrels to help avoid being spotted, just keep your distance from enemies while using them. Assassinate guards that are standing alone so that you don’t have to worry about them spotting you. Once you’ve finished the File and the report comes up you will see your time listed. Finish in under 7 minutes and the achievement is yours.

Surprise Attack.jpg
Surprise Attack! (20G)
Arrive at the objective in File R-07 without being spotted.
You’ll need at least 2 3D Photo Frames to complete this, which you can gather from the beginning of File R-07. Just run through to the base wall, save by calling Courtney, then restart to grab a second one. Make use of your boxes and the environment to either sneak past guards or lure them to places they can be executed. If you have trouble, here is a great video guide that will help. Once you reach the objective the achievement is yours.

Anti-Cyborg Sentiment.jpg
Anti-Cyborg Sentiment (5G)
Destroy a total of 100 Cyborgs during story mode.
Cyborgs are the generic enemies in Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance, and you will get this achievement before you reach the halfway point of the game if you’re fighting most everyone.

The Bigger They Are.jpg
The Bigger They Are… (10G)
Destroy a total of 100 Custom Cyborgs during story mode.
Custom Cyborgs carry swords, and the best place to find them is in File R-07. If you complete all three playthroughs and still haven’t gotten this achievement you can just replay File R-07 a few times and you’ll get it.

Demilitarized Zone.jpg
Demilitarized Zone (15G)
Destroy a total of 100 Heavily Armed Cyborgs during story mode.
Heavily Armed Cyborgs are the ones carrying hammers. Just like the Custom Cyborgs, the best place to find them is in File R-07. If you’ve completed all 3 playthroughs and still haven’t gotten this achievement, just replay File R-07 a few times and you’ll get it.

Herpetophobia.jpg
Herpetophobia (20G)
Destroy a total of 10 Gekkos during story mode.
Gekkos are the upright mechs that like to kick you. You should come across at least 10 in one playthrough that you can destroy for the achievement (Gekkos are everywhere). If you haven’t gotten it in your first playthrough, don’t worry, you’ll definitely get it while working on the “Become a Lightning God” achievement.

Silverback.jpg
Silverback (15G)
Destroy a total of 10 Mastiffs during story mode.
Mastiffs are the ape looking enemies found throughout the game. You will most likely get this achievement in one playthrough, but if not you will get it before completing all three playthroughs.

Extinction Level Event.jpg
Extinction Level Event (20G)
Destroy a total of 10 Raptors during story mode.
Raptors are another upright mech, but they look more compact and are much more aggressive than the Gekkos. You will also never see a Raptor on patrol, they only appear during alerts. You should get this in one playthrough if you’re engaging in most outright battles. If not you can replay File R-02 a few times, you face two when you save the boy before the research facility.

Pond Scum.jpg
Pond Scum (20G)
Destroy a total of 5 Vodomjerka during story mode.
Vodomjerka are the spider-like mechs that breath fire. You can find them in File R-02’s sewers. Right before you enter the research lab through the projected wall they will continue to spawn, so feel free to kill 5 there before moving on.

Wolf Hunter.jpg
Wolf Hunter (20G)
Destroy a total of 10 Fenrirs during story mode.
They are the dog mechs, but are weaker than the companion LQ-841 and cannot speak. You will encounter more than 10 during your playthroughs, so this achievement shouldn’t be a problem.

Slider Strike.jpg
Slider Strike (15G)
Destroy a total of 10 Sliders during story mode.
Unmanned flying mechs, Sliders can be very dangerous in packs. The easiest way to destroy them is with homing missiles, though locking on and using jump attacks will work just as well. Again, you should encounter plenty during your playthroughs to get this achievement.

Jumping the Shark.jpg
Jumping the Shark (20G)
Destroy a total of 10 Hammerheads during story mode.
Hammerheads are the helicopters. They can be a pain, but the trick is to either shoot it with rockets a few times or lock on and jump attack it until you get to Ninja Run up the missiles. When the Kanji appear use blade mode to chop the helicopter in half for an easy kill. Once you’ve destroyed 10 the achievement is yours.

Looking Out for the Little Guys.jpg
Looking Out for the Little Guys (5G)
Destroy a total of 30 Dwarf Gekkos during story mode.
Dwarf Gekkos are the small three limbed balls that like to jump and grab your head. They are more of an inconvienience than an actual challenge. The easiest way to dispatch groups of them is by using the pole-arm/whip weapon from the first boss to attack a bunch at once. Destroy 30 of them and the achievement is yours.

Tearing Away the Disguise.jpg
Tearing Away the Disguise (20G)
Destroy all of the humanoid Dwarf Gekkos during story mode.
The humanoid Dwarf Gekkos are two Dwarf Gekkos with one standing on the others… shoulders I guess. There are 5 in total, found in File R-02, File R-03, File R-04, File R-05, and File R-07. You must get all of these in the same playthrough, in order, without quitting any of the missions. Yes, you must play from File R-02 straight through File R-07 and get each humanoid Dwarf Gekko without quitting out of any mission. You must also get them in order, so I suggest doing this in one of your playthroughs, or in an easy playthrough at some point. This video explains the criteria for spawning each humanoid Dwarf Gekko, and I highly suggest watching through the entire thing before starting so that you don’t miss anything. Kill all 5 and the achievement is yours.

Datsu Right.jpg
Datsu Right (15G)
Successfully complete 50 Zandatsus during story mode.
A Zandatsu is performed when the kanji (Japanese symbols) pop up on the screen, usually after doing a fair amount of damage to an enemy. Press the right trigger and you’ll go into a slowed down blade mode in which you can easily kill the enemy by dismemberment. Complete 50 Zandatsu attacks and the achievement is yours.

What Doesn't Kill You.jpg
What Doesn’t Kill You… (20G)
In story mode, successfully parry 10 attacks in a row in one minute or less.
This is easiest during a boss fight. On normal difficulty and above, you must press the analog stick in the direction of the attacking enemy and press X. I got this during the first boss fight, just keep blocking and you’ll get it easily, the bosses attack very frequently. If you have trouble you can play on easy and turn the easy blocking on, which makes it so that you only have to press X to block. Block ten attacks in a row and the achievement is yours.

Assassin Behind Closed Doors.jpg
Assassin Behind Closed Doors (15G)
Successfully complete 30 Ninja Kills during story mode.
Any instant stealth kill counts as a Ninja Kill. The two options are walking up behind someone and pressing B to stab them through the torso, or being above an enemy and moving into position that the B prompt pops up to do a jumping downward foot stab into the enemies head. Complete 30 of these and the achievement is yours.

You Don't Run from Chance.jpg
You Don’t Run from Chance (15G)
Successfully complete 50 executions during story mode.
An execution is when you have a button press notification pop up on the screen, usually after a successful counter attack, which can instantly kill an enemy. The easiest things to do these on it soldiers and Gekkos. The nice thing is that an execution usually gives you an opportunity to perform a Zandatsu as well, so you should get this around the same time you get “Datsu Right.” Complete 50 executions throughout any number of playthroughs and the achievement is yours.

A Lover, Not a Fighter.jpg
A Lover, Not a Fighter (20G)
Successfully complete 10 No Kill battles during story mode.
You will need to first find all five guards hiding in cardboard boxes to unlock the wooden sword (see “Peekaboo” below for details on their locations). Equip the wooden sword and complete 10 fights using only that weapon. The wooden sword does not kill enemies, and you’ll know it’s working because the enemies won’t explode when they go down, they glow white and fade away. The easiest way to do this is by replaying the first battle in File R-05 in which you fight 4 guards. Defeat them 10 times with the wooden sword and nothing else and the achievement is yours.

Assault with a Deadly Weapon.jpg
Assault with a Deadly Weapon (20G)
Dismember three enemies during Blade Mode with a single attack.
This sounds much more complicated than it is. There are many times during the game when you’ll be fighting a large group of standard Cyborgs. All you need to do is get three close together and perform a horizontal Blade Mode slash. As long as you chop at least on limb from three different enemies, the achievement is yours.

Rip Em Apart.jpg
Rip ‘Em Apart (15G)
In story mode, kill 100 enemies by cutting them.
You will easily get this during the course of the game. If you’re having trouble, wait until you’ve unlocked Ripper Mode and fight large groups of standard Cyborgs. Turn on Ripper Mode and you will be cutting Cyborgs into pieces left and right, and as soon as you kill 100 in this way the achievement is yours.

Love at First Sight.jpg
Love at First Sight (15G)
While remotely operating a Dwarf Gekko in story mode, find and communicate with all Dwarf Gekos.
During File R-02 you will take control of a Dwarf Gekko for a short time. This achievement is best done at the same time as “Dwarf Raiden,” since incapacitating all of the soldiers first will make it easier to search for the Dwarf Gekkos. Once all the soldiers are out of the way you can begin finding all the Dwarf Gekkos. When you find one, approach and press the LB button, and then the Y button. One of the buttons makes you dance with the Dwarf Gekkos, the other makes you clap. I’m not sure exactly which one gets the achievement, so do both just to be safe. The Dwarf Gekkos are shown on the map as glowing red dots, just like the unconscious Cyborgs, so they aren’t too difficult to find. There are five in total, and this video does a great job of showing where they all are if you’re having trouble. Communicate with all 5 Dwarf Gekkos and the achievement is yours.

A Big Fan of Lefties.jpg
A Big Fan of Lefties (20G)
Acquire all enemy officers’ left arms.
There are 30 left arms spread across the game. Personally, these are the most annoying of all the collectibles in the game. The following list contains how many arms are in each chapter, along with the arm’s ID number. I suggest checking them off as you go so that you know which ones you may have missed. When going through the mission, search enemies carefully in AR mode. Anyone with a collectible arm will have a bright bluish area flashing on their left arm. The best way is to sneak up behind them and go into Blade Mode to chop off their arm if possible, as it’s much more difficult to keep track of who to hit if a battle starts.

Note: you must complete the chapter after collecting the arms in order for them to count. This means that you won’t get the achievement until AFTER you complete the last chapter that you collected arms in. Here’s the list:

File R-00: Guard Duty
  • No Left Arm IDs.

  • ID #23
  • ID #24

Collect all 30 Left Arm IDs and the achievement is yours.

Amateur Radio Operator.jpg
Amateur Radio Operator (50G)
Listen to most of the codec conversations.
When you press select during Story Mode you will be shown a list of all the available people to call. You will have to call them multiple times during each File, including during boss fights. You can fast forward the conversation by pressing Y, and you can spread this over multiple playthroughs. The best way to go about this without making calls every two seconds is to call as often as you can, and during subsequent playthroughs make calls in areas you hadn't before. You need to have almost every conversation throughout the game for this, which does require a decent amount of time, but once you do the achievement is yours.

Peekaboo.jpg
Peekaboo (20G)
Discover all of the soldiers hidden in cardboard boxes.
There are 5 total guards hiding in cardboard boxes throughout the game. There is one in File R-01, File R-02, File R-03, File R-04, and File R-07. The boxes look just like the one that you receive to sneak around in, and they usually aren’t too hidden away, but they are easy to miss. This video does a great job of walking you towards each guard in a box. Find all 5 and you’ll unlock the Wooden Sword and the achievement is yours.

Data Mining.jpg
Data Mining (20G)
Acquire all storage devices.
There are 20 data storage units found scattered around the world. Some are in boxes, while most are just lying around. You will see white brackets around them, just like any other item, so they do jump out a little bit when you get close to them. Here’s the list of which File they all of them are in:

File R-00: Guard Duty
  • Data Storage 01
  • Data Storage 02
File R-01: Coup d'État
  • Data Storage 03
  • Data Storage 04

  • Data Storage 20

Collect all 20 and the achievement is yours.

Humanitarian Assistance.jpg
Humanitarian Assistance (25G)
Rescue all the civilians.
There are 4 civilians in the game that you must save for this achievement. The easiest way to save them is to use EMP of RP grenades to stun the Cyborgs, then dispatch them quickly. If you initiate an alert battle the Cyborgs will execute the civilians before turning to fight you. There are 2 civilians in File R-00, 1 in File R-03, and 1 in File R-05. Use stealth executions and your grenades to save them and they will run off. Save all 4 and the achievement is yours.

Analysis Complete.jpg
Analysis Complete (20G)
Unlock every VR Mission.
VR Missions are unlocked by inspecting small computer terminals during story mode. The first one is called out during File R-01, so you’ll know exactly what you’re looking for. They are generally found just off the main path, and they are highlighted when using AR mode. Keep a watchful eye and you won’t have much problem. The following list will tell you which VR Missions are unlocked in which chapter:

File R-00: Guard Duty
  • No VR Missions.
File R-01: Coup d'État
  • VR Mission 01
  • VR Mission 02
  • VR Mission 03
  • VR Mission 04
File R-02: Research Facility

VR Master.jpg
VR Master (30G)
Complete every VR Mission.
This isn’t too difficult, simply play through each VR Mission once. You don’t need to get a medal at all, just complete all 20. Once you’ve completed all 20 missions the achievement is yours.

Virtually a God.jpg
Virtually a God (50G)
Set the highest score on every VR Mission.
This can be very difficult depending on your skill with this style of game. You will need to beat the 1st place rank goal on all 20 VR Missions. This is mostly practice plus trial and error. Do everything possible to shave your time and you’ll get it eventually. There is a video guide series for this achievement available, so if you’re having a lot of trouble I suggest you check it out. Complete all 20 VR Missions with a 1st place rank and the achievement is yours.

The Politics of Silencing Foes (30G)
Defeat Senator Armstrong without taking any damage on Hard difficulty or above.
All of the secret achievements are going to take some practice. You’ll likely need to play each boss a number of times on Hard mode to get used to their attack patterns, then a couple more times to actually get the achievement. The key to all of the fights is patience and blocking. Only attack when you are given a good opening, and take your time. The duration of the fight does not matter, so take as much time as you need and avoid every attack (including attacks from other enemies that may spawn during the fights). Once you've completed a boss fight without taking damage on hard difficulty the achievement for that boss is yours. Good luck!

Getting all the achievements on this game was really fun. Got them weeks ago, when the game came out, cuz it was that addictive. Couldn't stop playing until I got all achievements. Now I have to get the 2 achievements for the DLC VR Missions!
