Microsoft wanted to do the Macbook Pro Retina move huh?

If you don't know what I meant: Apple began to take out optical drives from their main computer products one by one a few years ago or last year, so they are in fact purely digital systems. Microsoft considered to go that route. But yeah, you know what happened. Personally, I like the optical drive. I don't know but sometimes, there might be a game I'd love ona disc so yeah, good decision to have the optical drive.

I think with the uproar about the pre owned games thing they realised that they couldn't go without a disk drive for the time being. I personally also use the X1 as a DVD/Blu Ray player as well, which would have gone out of the window had there been no optical drive

I like discs too. There's something emotionally satisfying about "Putting the game in" that I've held onto since I was blowing out NES cartridges and stuffing them in the console.

I always loved that about getting a new game, unwrapping it, and putting the cartridge or disc in. When I was younger--which is odd to say, I'm not really up there in age--there were more instruction manuals in cases and PS cases would just use the book as the cover. At any rate, we'd take those to school when we had new games and show them to everyone and stuff. "I got this!" "Oh, I wanna play that! I'll trade you this!" and so on.

To the original topic, I see Microsoft running with no-disc drive in say the next Xbox (if there is one). They want Xbox to be an all purpose entertainment box (that plays games) and going digital for everything would truly achieve that goal since everything would be in one place, no going to the game store, etc.

I still love buying physical discs, it's still my preferred method of getting a game. Though I'm not one for standing in line anymore, I prefer staying my house, ordering fast food and having the disc at my door. I understand why Microsoft though about this though because we do seem to be going slowly in that direction.

Microsoft has always talked about how going full digital is the future but they also have to face the reality. Not everyone is capable of downloading full games online, also the whole fuss on DRM didn't help either. I'm an old school gamer, I still prefer to own physical copies as opposed to digital. To be honest, I wouldn't have bought the Xbox if there wasn't any disc drive in it.

I'm glad Microsoft didn't go the no-disc drive route. I know digital only is coming eventually, I just don't think ready for it yet. I want a little more time to actually enjoy growing a collection. They're probably trying to sort out the issue with people not being able to download full games. If Microsoft really wanted Xbox to go fully digital and the concept to take off globally, they could do something like invest in...wifi blimps. That's expensive as hell though lol.

If they did go with the no disc route we would have a big problem. Downloading stuff for hours just to get updates and the games.

I'm not sure why people are so upset with digital only.

Anyone who uses steam, same idea. Everything is digitial, discounted games every once in a while, take your game to wherever.

Used games? There are plenty of online distributers who are working in trading your online games in for cash.

Yea it limits where you can buy it from, but I don't see it limiting what you can do.

Wi-Fi blimps would be ridiculous if all they wanted to do is make digital only a thing and make it actually functional for everyone. Kind of out there idea.

I think when you think about it, they probably went with a disc drive 'cuz after all, it's the next Xbox. So they know that the returning fanbase are coming. Steam was already digital from the very start and they were able to build their fanbase. They're slowly building up the fanbase for those who would go digital all the way. But they can't go for a digital-only device since users like the ones here in this thread still prefer to go for the disc drive. I guess it's not yet time to adapt to the digital-only route.

I mean, whats the big deal anyway? I rarely use disc drives on PC with steam I see no reason for consoles to not do the same.

yeah, well another possiblity might be because they might have planned xbox one to have a backwards compatibility over the other consoles.

Well, it's a big deal for some repliers here so I guess it's not yet time to adapt to the digital-only route, at least for the console crowd. Steam had us adapt to it, and now people are just glad they can get games digitally. If there are people still complaining about digital-only, then they're not ready for it.
