Microsoft to buy Minecraft (Rumor)

Well, with Microsoft they have a very strong company buying them out. It will be interesting to see the response compared to the previous deals that Notch has decided against. The Minecraft trademark has exploded and shown no signs of stopping. There is also large brand appeal by younger gamers. There is alot more that can be done in this arena and I actually think this is a good deal for both companies. I don't know if there is value aside from Minecraft but it is a very sizable asset.

I was just reading this IGN article - http://www.ign.com/articles/2014/09/10/how-microsoft-buying-mojang-could-change-minecraft-forever .
Interesting read but the reason I'm sharing it is that they provide a good explanation on why Minecraft is so important for gaming and a great purchase for Microsoft. Minecraft is the third best selling game ever, right behind Mario games and Wii Sports. Since its release it has became a cultural phenomenon and that in itself is great value, beyond money.

$2 billion dollars is a lot of money. I mean I would think twice if I were being offered that sum of money but I think this became more of an issue because Notch is really against "corporations" but hey, look at Occulus.

I really don't see how Minecraft is a 2 billion dollar game, sure it's one of the most played games around the world, but 2 billion?
The only game that I could see being sold for that kind of money is World of Warcraft, since it has a very steady income stream coming in every month, Minecraft really doesn't pull any money in besides the box sales.
Maybe Microsoft just wants the technology to apply it to something different?

Minecraft is written in Java, there's no super technology behind it really.
I was on the tigsource forums when Minecraft first appeared as an improved clone of 'Infiniminer' - it was simple back then, got more complicated as time went by, but still, there's no secret in its making. The game has value because of its cultural significance. It's like Lego, but on the XBox.

Well, Xbox 360 sales of the game totaled over 12 million in sales, which is over $200 million in revenue. There are similar sales figures for the PC and PS4. Then you've got sales on mobile. Then you've got the PS4 and Xbox One versions recently hitting the market. Likely, the franchise has grossed over $1.0 billion in game sales alone. Then you've got tons of merchandise that has probably brought in tens of millions already. So it's not that surprising that Microsoft would value the company at $2 billion.

Minecraft is far more than just game sales. Mods and videos that users profit from through advertisements. Merchandise.
