The latest title in the NASCAR franchise, NASCAR '14, will launch on current-gen platforms because next-generation market share doesn't yet justify the cost of development, Eutechnyx's EVP, Ed Martin told Extra Mustard.

According to Martin, "the nail in the coffin" to bypass the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One was when SCEE CEO Jim Ryan announced last May that Gran Turismo 6 was debuting on PS3 and not PS4 because of the current console's install base. Ryan explained at the time that the PS3 has an install base of 70 million units, while "on launch day we'll have an install base of zero units" for the PS4.

NASCAR '14 will feature official teams, tracks and drivers from the racing sport. It will also include a career mode, as well as league competition with rankings, statistics and challenges. The NASCAR Highlights mode lets players race in real-life scenarios from NASCAR's current season. Developed by Eutechnyx, who also created NASCAR: The Game 2013 and NASCAR The Game: Inside Line, NASCAR '14 is due for release on Xbox 360, PS3 and Windows PC Feb. 18 for $49.99.

I'm sure this is decision smaller to mid size developers are struggling with and justifiably so. By the time that this next holiday season rolls out I'm sure this won't be an issue any longer, but in the mean time this may be a bummer for many of you hardcore racing sim fans. I have never personally ben a huge fan of the Nascar game series since the controls often feel clunky to me as do the animations. Granted I have't played one of these games recently, so for all I know they;re vastly improved. Ho do you guys feel about the series? Are you disappointed by this news? Let us know!

Not really disappointed hearing this news since I don't find NASCAR games to be interesting. Not knocking the game and the sport, but not my cup of tea. However, I do find this to be a bit alarming and I hope other companies don't play the wait game for the same reasons. Every gaming system takes time to get up to the level of its predecessor in relationship to number of games and user base.

I hope the Xbox One doesn't become a Wii U, where developers decide to skip it out. But I think like what the mod-man says, by the time holiday 2014 rolls in, Xbox One won't be skipped out. But quite alarming nevertheless.

Not surprised. The next-gen install base, while it's at the 3-4 million, isn't enough to justify the release. Copies might go at just a few thousands so yeah, it might as well just go with the current-gen or last-gen in the meantime.

Same here. Not really a fan of Nascar games.

Hmmm... not really interested or surprised. I've never been into the NASCAR franchise so if the developers feel they need to skip the next-gen, fine with me.

Same here, but if they show something cool on the new game I wouldn't mind getting it.

Still that isn't 100% sure. Well anyways, I'm still skipping this game. Not that good for me.

I didn't see it as 100% sure either. That said NASCAR will be back and as some said it'll be on current generation consoles. NASCAR will have a presence on the PS4 and X1...just maybe/maybe not next year.

That's right man. If those gamers will switch over, then MSFT can definitely pull that plug,.

Yup, that's right. There's still a big install base for the 360 so it'll take time. If MSFT does pull it right now, the 360 gamers are gonna go mad.

It does make sense. Well most of the good games are also available on 360.
