I have been reading a lot about online-only games and how they have exclusive content that you can't get in stores. Do you think that online-only games are going to be the next big thing? I would think so because it's environmentally friendlier (less energy used to make and distribute the discs and packaging materials). Can you guys see this happening in the gaming industry? It reminds me of the way the CD died. I like opening up the game and having it in my collection. What do you guys think?

Its nice to look at my 360 collection starting with the first Saints Row. Ive been on live for 7 years now
seen some amazing ideas come to life. But with time things change. Always online is a great idea and I think we will see it in the near future. As far as digital downloads I am all for it. In fact I will be getting 99% of my games via dl. Unless of course there is some amazing pre order bonus.

I really don't think I will get any games online unless they are exclusive downloads. You also can get exclusive things with preorders and buying in the store.

How do you trade and sell something you downloaded? I usually don't keep games after I beat them and sell them so I need a box unless I find out different.

Look at Elder Scrolls Online and GTA Online... They are both utterly focussed around online play and GTAO is practically separated from the normal game. Rockstar were definitely thinking online is the way forward and I can bet that games will come out where co-operative play is the only choice.

I think online-only games are going to gain popularity as time passes, but I think it will be quite a while (if ever) before they actually stop putting them on discs. Most people I know right now (myself included) would rather have the game on disc than online only or just stored on the hard drive.

I hope not, sometimes I just like to chill and play some singleplayer and if I look back some of the best experiences I've had in gaming were made in singleplayer one of the last ones I recall were made in The Last of Us.. damn feelings!

I don't think so. It takes a lot of energy and bandwidth to stream this stuff to us live. Maybe someday we'll have digital download only but I don't think online only will be a thing anytime soon. Not everyone has internet access all the time and people who travel are going to get screwed. I think it would be a bad move for business and PR.

Eh, I wouldn't say the CD has died. I still buy physical albums from music stores, and so do many people. Digital music has become the more popular medium, and it will be the same with games in a few years. However there will still be that niche of collectors who want to hold the game in their hands, just like there are still people like me who prefer buying tangible copies of music albums.

Im sure DVDs and een bluerays will go the way of the floppy.

Remember when EVERY pc had a floppy disk drive, now NONE have a floppy disc drive...

I built a pc recently, forgot to buy a DVD/BD/CD driver, and everything has been fine.

I see people talking 2 different things here:

1 is playing games online only no single player

and

2 is downloading everything and not being able to buy discs.

I can see 5-10 years from now, downloading only for games. It's already starting to happen with computers slowly.

Not sure, but I'm ok going totally digital sans CD/DVD/Blu-Ray. I currently own a tablet and a smartphone. I love the fact I can go to a specific online store and simply download a game. Although, a part of me is still old skool... The feeling, going into a game store to purchase a game still feels good.

As rkkeller has shown there is a problem with the - "we're totally only going to download in the future". Most of the games are hideously huge - therefore the storage on disc as opposed to hard drive. And yes you have the ever-blessed Cloud, but as some companies have started saying... not the safest, most efficient way to handle things. Also the United States is seriously lacking in terms of the type of infrastructure needed to make this a real reality.

And as for the - "all games are going to be online" thing that's got many of the same issues as only downloading. Besides which - how much will it cost to only game online? There have to be servers, people to tend the servers, and people to actually buy the game in the first place. I honestly can't see this happening considering how much a risk launching a game has - I mean really... Maybe Call of Duty or World of Warcraft, but what of lesser known games?

Well, i don't really agree with the "CD died" part. i use them constantly since they are cheap and i have to burn different linux distro's of under 700mb. It depends on what is your occupation as well as point of view/

I'll be honest, if we had to go all digital, I'd be fine...

Online games have their pro's and con's. You don't or need a bit of internal memory, you don't have to worry about data integrity, purchase is easier, and you can play from anyone's console with no further steps involved. The minuses are that you are glued to the internet. if something happens - you are sitting and reading a book. That's pretty much all i can think of

Well, i prefer a combination. If a game supports offline mode - awesome. cause i have constant troubles with the internet
