Overkill Software is in a good spot with Payday 2. The just-released co-op heist shooter is already profitable -- it was even before launch, if you can believe that -- and game director tells OXM "There's like a year of DLC planned." Which may be offputting to hear right now, especially phrased like that, but continued support for a game people enjoy isn't inherently bad.

Among the studio's plans is the possible introduction of a playable female character. "I'm hoping -- I don't know if we'll get it as our first DLC, because we'd have to redo all the animations so it doesn't look like a dude walking around with a female body," he explained. "But I'd like to do that."

Continuing: "...it's just a question of when on the timeline. Because I want, like I said, I want my daughters to be able to -- no, I'd need to wait a bit for that -- but in theory, it'd be cool for them to mask up. I just think it'd be cool if we had both, that's all. It's definitely on our list. One of the many things that are on our list."

This situation reminds me of Unknown Worlds and Natural Selection 2, which is another studio that's taking the post-release route with its female marine character. Giving players more choice, in my experience, is rarely if ever a bad thing. Even if it takes time to get there.

This is some pretty good news, as it's rare that besides games like Call of Duty that developers decide to release a constant stream of DLC game for about a year. That being said, hopefully the DLC is actually worth purchasing and isn't something that isn't even worth the money. I'm definitely looking forward to this game though, as the previews for it look great.

This is pretty great, I'm glad they're supporting it. Unfortunately, I don't have my full four man squad anymore, so I don't think I'll be playing Payday 2. I used to play Left 4 Dead with a bunch of people, but they all pretty much stopped gaming, and from what I understand, Payday 2 has terrible single player. It's a shame really, as I was super excited at the concept, and couldn't wait to play it. Unfortunately, I'd rather spare myself the pain of playing online with uncooperative random players, as it seems like the game will require a lot of coordination and teamwork.

But it's always good to see a developer supporting their game long term.

That's nice to see that the developers want to fully support their title. It's all to familiar for a game to have one or two DLC then call it a day. I have no plans on getting PAyday 2 but hopefully this trend of steady DLC will catch on.
