At present, the prospect of a new Project Gotham Racing title for Xbox One seems uncertain, if words from Microsoft Studios Corporate VP Phil Spencer are to be believed. According to Spencer, Microsoft is "kind of full in the racing space right now."
The last PGR game was PGR 4 for Xbox 360 released in 2007. Since Bizarre Creations went on to be acquired by Activision where the studio made Blur before being closed down, the future of the Project Gotham Racing franchise has been floating in limbo.
However, the series could have a future, according to Spencer who when asked about PGR responded: "Maybe. I think the Kudos system that we had in PGR was the real secret sauce. I thought that was the thing that people really loved. It had a great feel, it was there at launch, which I think was important."
Amid rumours of PGR making a return, Spencer and Turn 10 have even held discussions regarding the franchise. "We talk, (Turn 10 boss) Alan Hartman and I, talk about PGR. I think we're kind of full in the racing space right now when we think about our franchises, but I know there's a lot of love for that franchise out there and it'd be interesting to think about what we could do."
It seems that Microsoft is currently more than happy with keeping Forza Motorsport and Forza Horizon going for now, with a third racing series being one too many. "I don't know that we'd ever have three console racing franchises. That seems like a lot for a first party with Forza Horizon and obviously Forza Motorsport," Spencer stated, citing the differences between Forza Motorsport and the more arcade-oriented Horizon.
"Forza Horizon, I'd say, it's not PGR from an arcade style, but it's not me sitting on a circuit running lap after lap. It's more of an open-world."
Spencer also said that Gears of War would need to be be given a "more gritty" reinvention if it were to come back on Xbox One.
