I played the first Bioshock a while back but haven't had a chance to play the second one yet. However, it's on my Christmas list along with a few other games, so I plan to have it soon. I keep hearing that the campaign is good but the multiplayer is not. Thoughts?

I'm not sure if Bioshock's multiplayer is any good or not. I played the original Bioshock when it first came out, but I didn't own the game so I never got around to trying it out online.

The multiplayer for Bioshock 2 seems pretty lacking. It was like they forced single player into an awkward new format with no real view as to what they wanted out of it.

I disagree, i like the Bioshock 2 multi-player presentation. It takes a little getting used to but I'm glad they didn't try to clone other titles like Halo or MW, they have a feel all their own which is a GOOD thing.

I like that they tried for a new take on multiplayer, don't get me wrong... but player interaction is lacking in my opinion and gameplay doesn't seem focused on core principles of multiplayer (i.e. interaction).

Moxidate - Since the multiplayer does not seem to be focusing well on person-to-person interaction, what does it seem to be focusing on, instead? Just curious, as I haven't played the multiplayer for this game.

A more single-player experience, with dual user support sort of... crammed in. That's just my take on it, I'd love to hear someone else's opinion on the matter, seeing as it's been a while since I actually played.

I personally enjoy the multiplayer, but there's a huge issue with the servers. Even when the game was relatively new, I'd experience lag quite frequently, and I have a decent connection. I played about 6 months ago, and it was even worse; so I can imagine that's still the case. At this point, it's pretty much only worth playing if you're going for the achievements, unless you have an uncanny ability to tolerate lag.

As for how it is despite the lag, it's not too shabby. It borrows quite a lot from the CoD formula, such as loadouts, perks, attachments, etc, but is still its own beast. The weapons are balanced well, and there's just enough variety. Much like the single player, there are a plethora of ways to get kills aside from the guns, such as hacking turrets and vending machines, plasmids, (interesting combos are possible as well, such as shocking a geyser trap to make it an insta-kill) and Big Daddy suits, which spawn randomly and make the lucky player who gets it a juggernaut. There are challenges much like Call of Duty, and it also features a similar rank-up/unlock system. The gametypes are varied and fun, and none of the maps are dodgy.

All in all, this was a great effort at multiplayer that would have been much better had they invested in better servers. It was a lot of fun in its heyday, and I'd still be playing it if not for the lag.
