Xbox 360 reach the old growth forest

I'm trying to do the part in assassins creed 3 on the horses and you have to stop the patriots before they get to the village. Is it just me or is this part really difficult. I swear i feel like i wanted to throw the game out the window. Anyone got a good idea on how to complete this part of the game. I kill a couple but can never get to them all. Its really bad design this part or am i just doing it wrong. I'm getting better at it but feel like theirs a better way to do this part.

I read online that the best way to do this is to run over the first guy with your horse, kill the next three guys with arrows/bullets, and cut across paths whenever possible to get close to the last guy, because he'll always follow the road.

I didn't realize that you could run over people with your horse. Looks like I'll try riding a horse more often! This should be an achievement!
