Patch Expected to Improve Xbox One's GPU.

Microsoft is reportedly looking to improve the Xbox One's graphical performance in an upcoming patch. According to Hot Hardware, gaming insider Pete Doss has stated that Microsoft will relax GPU requirements for Kinect in order to achieve such results. As it is now, the Xbox One reserves 10 percent of its total GPU power for the Kinect, with 8 percent alone required for video processing. The alleged patch will purportedly free up that 8 percent for use in actual gameplay, leaving the remaining 2 percent for the peripheral's voice input processing.

Even though I'm glad that Microsoft is at least doing something to rectify the performance issue but I doubt a patch can really improve on things. The most important thing is the the Xbox One is limited by hardware so I think whatever improvement will be minimal. Another thing is that, 10 percent reserved for Kinect??? What a waste of potential. Anyway, as little as it may seem, it's still a performance boost nevertheless.

I don't know what you guys think, but the graphics are definitely better on the Xbox One versus the 360. They aren't overwhelmingly amazing IMO, but they're better. I typically don't expect too much from launch titles though. Apparently there may be a patch in the works that will take some of the power reserved for the Kinect to allow for better graphics processing for games that don't utilize the Kinect. The 8% of GPU power that is reserved for the Kinect video processing wouldn't make that much of a difference in graphics, or at least I wouldn't think it would, but I could be totally wrong. What do you guys think?

Personally, I'm fine with the graphics the way that they are. We've come a long way from the original Nintendo, and even from the PS2 or the original Xbox. All of these screenshot comparing BF4 on the Xbox One vs. the PS4 don't really matter to me. On my 46" LED TV, I think it all looks the same. Do you guys really feel the need to get that extra 8%, or do you think it's a waste? I'm cool either way, but I'm curious as to what you guys think!

As Hot Hardware reports, via gaming insider Pete Doss, the unconfirmed patch would transfer GPU processing power from the Kinect to other parts of the Xbox One so that games would achieve a steadier frame rate and look better graphically as well. Right now, 10 percent of the total GPU processing power is devoted to the Kinect. This 10 percent is broken up between video processing and voice input processing. Eight percent of the GPU is given to the Kinect video processing power, but this patch would give that over to other components of the Xbox One while keeping the 2 percent for voice input processing.

This may not sound like much, but it could help games on the Xbox One look better in a variety of ways. While some may not see much difference in graphical detail, this extra GPU power could be used to steady the frame rate for games. When games suffer from dips in frames per second, the human eye is able to detect it much more noticeably than an overall slow frame rate. The latency jumps and bumps of a game that jumps around from 40 frames per second down to 20 are more distracting to the human eye than a steady 30 frames per second, so implementing this patch Microsoft could ensure that games have steady frame rates and look better overall.

I guess they're making way to the new games that will be coming out with really cool and high graphics. This may be a good move for them.

8% for the Kinect eh? I wonder what's gonna happen if that 8% is taken out for the Kinect. Well,we'll find out when the patch's out and when somebody tries it out.

Hmmm... a nice move but we'll need to see if it can really do its job. I'll just wait until they can get this patch out and let someone do it for us to truly see the difference. I definitely see Digital Foundry doing their thing with this.

True. We'll be seeing Digital Foundry do their work to see if this new patch will really do the trick. If it does, that changes the game entirely.
