Resident Evil and Silent Hill - two long running horror games with each dating way back to the PlayStation One. One focuses more on action while the other focuses more on chills. I loved them both. And if you are a horror game fanatic, I'm sure that you loved them too. But, do you think that one game series would outweigh the other? Which game do you prefer?

This is a difficult one. I have to say they are both equal. Playing these growing up, I enjoyed both of them, and I think they are both classics in their own right. I think Silent Hill is perhaps more scary as the atmosphere is darker and I remember being more scared as a kid playing this. I love everything about both of them, but if I had to really choose, then I'd say Silent Hill, because the latests Resident Evil was a little disappointing, just because the cut-scenes were a bit over dramatic.

I've played a lot more of the Resident Evil series, but I think I prefer Silent Hill more. Mostly because it is actually really scary and has a more interesting story in my opinion. But both are really great! Horror games are my favorite.

I think I would have to go with Silent Hill, because the atmosphere is pretty crazy and deep in Silent Hill. I mean, Resident Evil has a great world too, but Silent Hill really just takes you from reality. IMO, at least.

I'm big on horror as well and really enjoyed both of them. I think they have a lot to offer in their own right but if I had to choose my vote goes to Silent Hill, too. I found it much creepier and well developed in terms of story and atmosphere, which is a big factor for me.

Hey guys, you know what? I'm gonna stick with Resident Evil here. Why? Because I sometimes can't play Silent Hill alone... in the dark... when no one else is at home... It freaks me out more than Resident Evil. That's why I find RE more playable. Well, aside from me being a sissy, I also find the combat in RE games are a lot better than SH games which make them even more fun to play.

Resident Evil for me. The silent hill series never really spun off to mainstream success like most think it may of. Resident Evil has taken many paths to make it a household name.

I loved the first 4 Resident Evil games, but after that I just can't get into the series anymore. Also the movies have been absolutely atrocious. That being said, Silent Hill will always be one of the most terrifying games I've played as a kid. After the hospital part, I just tried to get further when it was daylight out until I beat it.

Wow...this is a tough one. I have played various games throughout both franchise series, and relatively enjoy both. However, if I had to choose one, I would have to go with Resident Evil. Although I'm not keen to the newer games' focus on action rather than the spooky atmosphere that made the initial game a hit, the Resident Evil just seems more realistic to me. I enjoy the idea of fighting citizens that have been transformed by a virus rather than fighting "other-worldly" creatures in the Silent Hill series. Furthermore, I'm a fan of being scared and not shocked; the gory details of the Silent Hill series don't appeal to me nearly as much as the spooky moments in Resident Evil.

Very tough questions, as they are both fantastic franchises, but I think early RE games are better than the entirety of the SH franchise. SH 2 was a masterpiece to me, but other than that, none of the games have come even close. I hope that this next generation Konami does something great with the franchise, same with Capcom really, because the last two RE games were a huge letdown.

Neither are that much in the horror business besides the original Silent Hill. That being said, Resident Evil is much better as a series, though recently it's pretty bad.

I'm obviously biased because I have played far more of SH then RE. I think my thing with RE is that besides RE4 and parts of RE5 most of the series was horribly disconnected i.e. the storyline was bad and was just sort of all over the place. SH on the other hand not only manage to have two separate storylines, but to intertwine them regularly. It also explores some fairly dark places with Shattered Memories and Downpour being perhaps their darkest yet. Probably the most important facet to the SH games is that it's the people not the monsters that are the most disturbing part. Pyramid head was a rapist, but James was okay with smothering his wife because he was tired of caring for her. Breaking the convent was bad, but maintaining it was so much worse (Homecoming). Silent Hill and the surrounding areas are apparently the worse place to be if you happen to be a child - you can be killed, you can be tortured, anything can happen to you and nobody really cares. That's all pretty heavy, but watching the interaction of such heaviness is fascinating.

TL;DR - My vote if for Silent Hill.

Yes, I do agree that the storyline of Silent Hill is a lightyears better than Resident Evil. I find the story of Resident Evil somewhat cheesy and cliche. Umbrella corporation... Zombies... Virus... Blah blah. But of course, Resident Evil makes up for this shortcoming in terms of gameplay. Actions speak loader than words. Gameplay speaks louder than story.

They are both great but if I have to pick one it would be Silent Hill. I prefer to get more into that mindset. With Resident Evil I love the movies a little more than the game, but with Silent Hill it has the creep factor both in the game and the movie.

I love them both, especially the old games from both series and RE 4. With just those games in mind, I don't prefer one over the other; they're both awesome in different ways.

Ah, but it depends on what you mean by action - both have ridiculous puzzles and lots of monsters. That said it isn't all quick time events and bullets in Silent Hill. You also got really big monsters at times, several boss, and of course things you can't fight. That said I have conclusively proven to myself that if the controls are at least somewhat useful I'll play anything with a good storyline (looking at you Rule of Rose). Which explains why RE isn't really something I bother with whereas all the SH are belonged to me.
