Why is there so much bitterness between Xbox and Playstation fans?

I'm not in a position to buy any new consoles right now, and I can barely afford to buy some of the games that are coming out in the next few weeks, but I've been keeping up to date with the news on both console launches. Yet after reading through numerous threads on numerous forums, there seems to be an absolute hatred between the two fanbases.

Everywhere I look there are people actively hating the other console. They overlook the obvious flaws in their own console, like the lack of launch titles and hardware problems (which have happened to both the PS4 and X1), and make fun of fans of the other console for those exact same problems. All of a sudden, gamers are more interested in the sales figures of their console rather than playing them, and it just comes across like these people are buying consoles simply to help 'their console' do better than the other.

I know this is obviously a minority of people, since a lot of people are having fun with their new games, but I'm really concerned that this is happening. There's nothing wrong with a healthy rivalry between companies, since it helps keep the industry alive (and forces everybody to try and innovate), but this sort of rivalry between fans is just wrong.

Fanboys, me personally just want to play games. But its the same argument between iPhone and Android. People pick something they like and feel that need to make other believes that its the right choice as well. Xbox One and PS4 are no different. Its a my dad can beat your dad up argument.

There's always the fanboy back and forth. This time it is worse because the consoles came out so close together. Remember, the PS3 was a year after 360, so while there were still many fanboy debates, it wasn't as bad as this.

This time is just ugly. It reminds me of a political campaign. Nobody talks about what good their candidate will do, only how bad the other one is. The problem is the amount of misinformation out there. People on both sides now just flat out lie. I don't care if someone is passionate about their favorite console, but when you start making facts up to prove you point, it goes to far.

It's strange seeing propaganda like that. I've never seen such vehement passion and hatred as I have with this generation. Misinformation is annoying in any capacity, but I feel like most consumers making these kinds of decisions haven't been too misguided. It's not like either choice is a bad choice, or even that one is a "better" choice than the other. That's where some disagree with me.

This generations both consoles just seem so similar in terms of features. They're both essentially really limited PCs now - I don't like that consoles are going in that direction, but that's a different thread for a different time. So with nothing major to differentiate them but price and exclusives (of which there are very few at this point) I have no idea what basis there is for an argument.

The worst is with CoD Ghosts running at 720p on X1 and 1080p on PS4. Playstation fanboys have been going crazy, spouting all sorts of nonsense about how the X1 is the 'inferior' console (not that that actually means anything, the Wii was the worst console last generation and far outsold the competition), yet I doubt that the average console gamer could tell at a glance whether a game was running in native 1080p or upscaled to 1080p. I know I couldn't.

If somebody came out with a satirical video that had a load of nonsense technical jargon that 'definitively proved' that one console was better than the other, you can guarantee that its fanboys would go nuts, and the fanboys of the other consoles would vehemently deny it.

It's upsetting that this is what gaming has become really.

Because some people are so invested in these systems they get personally offended if someone attacks 'their' system. Honestly I have every system eventually because I love to play games. I have a PS4 on order right now, will be here Monday and as soon as Target, Best Buy or amazon gets an Xbox one in stock I will get that too along with Ryse. Both systems are good and fun to play.

Personally I like to have choices when I go to get a new game.

people just think they are right about everything. when an opinion becomes an arguing point there is really no way to win. i know people with both systems at this point we joke about ps4 and xb1 but we dont really care. heck i played ps4 while waiting to get my xb1 fifa14 was fun actually.

It's the same thing for everything else. Apple vs Microsoft, Strawberry or chocolate icecream, car or motorbike, physical copy or digital copy... you know the deal. It also happens with religion, and in some cases it ends up in war. It's human nature to think that "they have the better opinion and taste", so of course console wars will also happen.

For a lot of people the insinuation that what the like may not be the absolute best thing in the world can be pretty annoying. Occasionally even people who are otherwise not like that can be drawn in to it because people do have the urge to defend something they like. A general banter is ok I guess but the kind of fanboy hating where people jump to review sites merely to give the other console negative ratings is incredibly stupid.

same reason there is bitterness between iphone fans and android fans. mac fans and PC fans. intel and AMD fans, Nvidia and AMD fans, chevy/ford and any other product that has two equally nice products.

People develop a brand loyalty and get tunnel vision. They protect their brand as if its a family member...

Well there are several things going into this that I think people might be ignoring:
1. It is impossible to actual bring up real concerns without being attacked. Like if you mention that the new Kinect might not function well - you will be shouted down more often than not.
2. When you are unable to have a discussion this can lead to serious frustration, and thus a kneejerk sense of dislike.
3. What is now considered misinformation was originally a serious discussion, and it was one that quickly became (almost) political in nature.

So it isn't necessarily all fanboy nonsense, so much as at some point it became impossible to mention issues about one or another platform without invoking a blood feud... and that is retarded.

Yeah, I feel you dood. I don't get it either. I used to be a complete fanboy to Sony for years but since I was introduced to Phoenix Wright in UMVC3, I ventured into the world of Nintendo (and then the PC world) and now I'm a bit more broad-minded in gaming. Now, I'm seeing a lot of good things about Xbox. So yeah, I really don't get the hatred at all. Personally, I'd like to have both the PS4 and Xbox One. More options = more fun!

I like ps4 and glad xbox one is out, it's good to have composition, that's how we all get good games. Everyone wins

There's haters everywhere, just be glad we don't live with these people

Yup, couldn't agree more. There's haters everywhere. Just take a good look at Youtube. You'll see that.

Me, it's all about the best of the both worlds. No need to be a part of the hate. Also, I play PC so I don't need to hate. Consoles and PC rule for me. Even handhelds!
