We’ll start with the obligatory caveat: VGChartz is a controversial website. Any sales numbers taken from the site should, for a variety of reasons, be taken with a grain of salt. The numbers presented below should be viewed as estimates rather than hard data.

That being said, VGChartz’ weekly global sales figures for the week ending Dec. 21st place Nintendo’s Wii U one spot ahead of Microsoft’s Xbox One. The Wii U sold 319,860 units globally according to VGChartz, while the Xbox One sold just 307,366.

Notably, the Xbox One is still not for sale in Japan. But Microsoft has never mounted much of a threat in that region. (According to the below chart, the PSP sold nearly 9,000 units in Japan, while the Xbox 360 sold a paltry 688, lower than any other system currently for sale in the region. There is little reason to believe the Xbox One will change this.)

I guess with the new titles coming out for Wii they became more popular.

Simply because I think currently the Wii U has more games in their library. Also the fact that it's cheaper than the Xbox One. The Wii U is also considered to be a family console where eveyone can play on so it made sense that more people chose the WIi U as a Christmas gift.

When the Nintendo exclusives actually hit en masse that's when Wii U will take off. You got Mario that just came out and was fantastic and Smash will deliver the goods in spades. DKC hitting later, mandatory console Zelda should be announced by E3, etc.

Yeah I'm not surprised that the Wii U did well. I own one and the current game library is pretty great. It's a console that the whole family or Nintendo fan can enjoy so that's why it did better this Christmas. But I agree with Streetshark, the Wii U will really take off when the new Zelda is released since that's why I think some fans have held back from buying it.

So True. Well the games that have been released for WII are better from the previous year. I guess it's good that they had a good sale last christmas.

Well, not surprising. This is signs of good things to come for the Wii U. This is almost like the same situation of the 3DS, when it was failing miserably. But after some price cuts and awesome exclusives, it finally took off. BUT.... guys, before you go on and make claims about this, remember what the paragraph says there: taken with a grain of salt. Some info in the site may or may not be fake, and how they were gathered is done controversially so yeah, just uhm try not to go too excited on this. But if it is true, then the Wii U is coming along nicely slowly. Anyway, that's just in weekly sales, not the lifetime sales.

Not surprising at all. After all Wii has been performing well at the middle of last year, roughly working their way again to the glory days.

I agree with you there dood. This is something Nintendo does that most companies don't do much in their life: doing the 1UP move! XD (pun intended very seriously). Somehow, Nintendo just patiently waits to let the exclusives come to the console and when they do, people will flock to them. But yeah, hope the Wii U isn't this generation's Gamecube, where it only sold 20M units in its lifetime.
