I've gone over the mistakes of the ONE and looked at how it can correct itself with the release of the Scorpio. PS4 has outsold the ONE 2 to 1. At this point I think offering the ONE S is futile. I might be on the Microsoft band wagon because I'm a PC guy, but I have to talk about what they did wrong.

For starters the ONE came out as a all in one digital media device and then a gaming console. PS4 went straight for gaming and never looked back. Everyone buys a console for gaming and not for movie storage. That is where Uncle Bill screwed up first.

Now this one is not really discussed much, but it has to have some bearing. FREE internet gaming. I use to have the original XBOX and bought a membership to play online. Years later I had a PS3, and internet gaming was free. So when the PS4 came out, why not play games online for free?!!!!!!!!

I know Uncle Bill is trying to squeeze as much as he can to create revenue, but I really think they should open the flood gates on this one as they are seriously taken a 2 to 1 hit on sales.

But online gaming isn't free on the Playstation 4 either? I do agree with you that I think it should be, but at the same time I wouldn't necessarily say that was one of the reasons that the Xbox ONE as fallen so far behind the Playstation 4 as the price to play online is the same (give or take a few dollars)

Microsoft will have learned from their mistakes in the past when it comes to launching the Scorpio, but I do think that Sony have the upper hand as their new consoles are released after Microsoft's, so any problems that console has, Sony can already have that potential issue fixed with their's when that's launched and that put's them at a distinct advantage.

I think the biggest things were that the Xbox brand wasn't as strong as the PlayStation brand outsidet North America, the forcing of the Kinect (which brought up the price dramatically), being slightly less powerful overall, not focusing enough on gaming and how their DRM measures were seen as draconian by many. While they were able to go back on the last one, the other things were really stacked against them.

I do think that Sony are a bigger brand in Europe and especially the Asian markets, but at the same time I would have thought that Microsoft would have had some sort of hold on them markets as well but by the latest sales figures that appears not to be the case.

If I was a marketing guru at Microsoft, I would be slightly worried that the Scorpio might meet the same fate as the Xbox ONE if they don't manage to get some sort of foothold, and while I'm sure that the US ill be the primary market that the Scorpio will be aimed at, I do think they are going to need sales in other parts of the world to be a lot better than hat they have been in the past before they can call the ne console a success.

The kinect did bring up the overall cost and didn't get the ONE off to a good start. Point taken. Did you notice that the New S model doesn't support the kinect? I'm guessing they finally caught on to it.

I have no experience with online gaming with the PS4. I still use the PS3. I just assumed the free online play was transferred over the the PS4.

I heard that the NEO is being released before Scorpio. Also this time around Microsoft went to the game makers and asked what they wanted in a new console. That's where they got the idea to add a 6 teraflop gpu. Game developers want it for VR. So Microsoft is giving it to them.

From what I understand there will be an adapter that will allow you to use the Kinect, but I think you have to buy it separately.

Well I cannot help but agree with the difference between the two in that PS4 went straight for gaming and not for movies and storage and all of those things. When it comes to a console, I am not looking for another computer. I have enough of those....I want to play games. So while I think that the idea is nice and innovation is always good, sometimes you just need to stick to what the machine is designed to do.

You'll find that a lot of the Playstation 3 oners where also under the impression that the online gaming on the Playstation 4 was also going to be free as well, and that's where I think Sony made a huge mistake. One of the main reasons people bought a Playstation 3 over an Xbox 360 was simply because they didn't want to pay to play online. Now we have no choice but to pay if we want to game online, so not only are companies like Sony and Microsoft making millions from the sales of their consoles, they are also cashing in on the fact that people want to play online as well and I don't think that is fair.

I think Microsoft was banking that they could appeal to a wider audience if they gave everyone a media player. That spread their attention on aspects other then gaming. The core of these consoles buyers are gamer's, first and foremost. Hopefully, on this next go around, they will ditch the notion of having to please everyone and hit the consumers that matter the most.......gamers.

There's no doubt that these days the consoles that are being released are more media centres than actual gaming consoles, and I agree with you that Microsoft especially need to maybe bring it back to basics and concentrate on what matter the most, and that should be the gaming aspect of the machines.

I'm not saying ditch the rest of the ideas but they have to realise like you say that people primarily buy a console for the gaming element, and they can play videos, browse the web and stream TV and movies on various other devices so aren't reliant on the console being able to do all that like it seems Microsoft think.

I can't blame them for trying. Adding features to a console is cool, but that an accessory and not a necessity. That took away from the gaming aspect and that had a direct affect on how gamer's reacted to it.

There is something to be said for the console manufacturers going back to basics and just releasing a console that is strictly just for playing games on. The problem is though, that will mean the sales will fall and people these days while they might like playing games, they have got used to having the other aspects on a console as well, so just releasing a console that just strictly plays games and does nothing else ill be considered a step backwards for the majority of people.

I definitely agree, I hate that they charge for online gaming, I feel like it's a right of the average gamer to have this feature for free. Although it's not that expensive, millions of people still can't afford to do it.

I didn't know the ONE sales were that bad, I knew the PS4 was doing what it needed to do and that was get sales, but not on that scale. It's good, but I thought ONE was doing just as good. I hate the all in one approach, that's why PS4 is my favorite and I think it always will be.

I have always loves SONY for keeping the gaming ahead of everything else. If I wasn't Netflix, I will get it on some other system, plus the ONE size was just way to big when it came out. I was funny watching people reactions to the size of it.

I agree with some of your points but one of the big things that needs to be added is the virtual reality aspect. PS4 has always had a hardware advantage, and they are now coming out with the project morpheus. They really need to add the VR aspect to this and take their time in getting in right and it could surpass Sony.

In response to the VR, as I've said in another thread I'm more than happy to let Sony take the lead on this and let them make the mistakes. There's no doubt that Microsoft will release VR for the Xbox or Scorpio system at some point, but I don't think it needs to do that straight away.

Let Sony release what they have, and then Microsoft can look at bettering it if possible.
