Xbox 360 Borderlands 2 Players

I just bought Borderlands 2 today, but I don't know which player to play as. Are they all the same, or will game play be different depending on which player I choose to play as?

Read the character description to get an understanding of what each character is like (they all have different skill trees and bonuses). As far as I know, the storyline does not differ for the characters, but I may be wrong considering I've only played as Zero. I think each character has different side quests but the overarching storyline remains the same for all of them.
