I was chatting with a friend on the phone last night, and was shocked when he told me that the Xbox One camera is always on. He claims that it records 24/7 and never stops. I don't like the idea that the camera might be on and streaming or recording me for some person somewhere else in the world to see. Is it true that the Xbox One camera never turns off?

From my experience it only records game footage. It doesnt record 24/7 like your friend states. I wouldnt be too worried.

No it most definitely does not.

The fanboy wars got out of control before launch and there is all sorts of misinformation out there. There's also people who just hate MS out there and like to make you think you made a bad purchase.

If you leave the X1 in the default state, Kinect is listening for you to turn it on with the "Xbox On" command. (it has to listen otherwise it wouldn't work!). Of course if you don't even like this you can turn it off so that off means "off".

From experience, the camera doesn't record that much, especially when you're not commanding it to record. So don't be worried about what your friend said. Like the others here, we know that it was just an attempt to destroy Microsoft's reputation.

well for one if it did then the xbone would have to be powering it 24/7 which means that it would take up electricity all the time and people would get upset over bills increasing. and second even if it did (which it doesn't, people were already super upset over it to begin with) with the amount of social media and other stuff the government already knows pretty much everything about you s

The X1 is "on" in what they call a low power state by default unless you turn it off. It has to be on to listen for the "Xbox on" command. You can change this in the settings, but if you didn't, it is "listening" for the command and taking a little bit of power. It is not recording or doing any kind of spying on you in this state, just listening for a single command.

It technically is "on" but it's not actually recording anything. This is because the Xbox has to respond to different voice commands even if it's turned off.

Yeah, follow what the others say here. It's another one of those paranoid things again. Unless you're really recording something by pressing the record button or something, it's not on 24/7. Besides that, it's using too much power if that were true.

Nah man, it's not recording 24/7. Read what the others say here. Your friend is just trying to scare you, or he probably read somewhere that it records 24/7. But there's no truth to it all. Unless you designate the camera to record, it won't. If that we're true, we'd be seeing ourselves in Youtube by now.

Nope, doesn't record unless you say record that when playing a game. It doesn't record you or the room. It listens 24/7 for commands to turn on though.

Ooooh. No recording at all but it listens 24/7 eh? That's where the little fear can peer in. As long as there isn't anything recording, then the command 24/7 is just fine.

The low power state the xb1 places itself in when not in use is much like keeping a lamp plugged in. It will be poised to react to your voice to turn the rest of its functionality on, but it is not always recording. Not only is that severely inefficient in terms of power (and completely annihilates the point of having a low power state), but there is no plausible use for such information even if it did record your every move like an Orwellian machine.

Microsoft would have to have more manpower, resources, and money than the US Government to do anything with these recordings, let alone sift through the millions upon millions of people who will be using one in the future, and I assure you, it does not.

Well, you put quite a good point there. Yeah, you make a good point there. Microsoft would have to spend a lot more money to even record everything. Imagine the GB, the TB and beyond to even record 2 million and counting players all over the world. Yes, it would take a lot of money.

That is true indeed. Microsoft would have to spend a lot of cash to even do the 24/7 recording. They'd have to be NSA-like to do it. We'd see a price increase in the Xbox One if they had to the 24/7 recording. Yeah, you make a good point there.

Your friend's just scaring you man. Don't believe what he says UNTIL you research and find out for yourself. As many say here, it's in a low power state when not in use and you'll have the chance to delegate commands to it. But never will it record you. So keep it cool.

Absolutely not true. The kinect is not recording ever unless you tell it too. Let's not forget you can always turn it off or disconnect it. I think your friend is either messing with you or believed the negative hype.

Both probably. Besides, it's already like the hidden NSA agenda. And if they did record 24/7.... they're like the Big Brother already. Anyway, yeah, definitely not true. Manpower + resources + lots of controversial stuff = 24/7 recording.

Someone just probably made up this mumbo jumbo to confuse us and probably to also destroy microsoft's reputation.

Right on the spot. Just lies after lies. People really don't know when to stop.

I don't thionk MS is that stupid. Recording 24/7 means huge amount of bandwidth wastage.
