We tested six multiplatform games on both consoles and every time, the PS4 was under a minute while the Xbox One install was several minutes long and required downloading an update before beginning the installation. When you include downloading those updates for each Xbox One game that happen in the background on PS4, the install times can get as high as fifteen minutes before you can even launch the game.
Assassin's Creed IV:
Xbox One (offline, no update): 5 minutes 50 seconds
Xbox One (with update, fastest connection): 7 minutes 2 seconds
Xbox One (with update, 10Mbps connection): 10 minutes 32 seconds
PS4: 42 seconds

The rest of these were tested on our office Wi-Fi which is around 9-11Mbps. It may have been faster on a wired connection, but you can compare your own connection speed here. These are our results:

Need For Speed Rivals:
XBO: 09:25 (including update)
PS4: 00:32

Just Dance 2014:
XBO: 08:48 (including update)
PS4: 00:45

NBA Live 14:
XBO: 16:26 (including update)
PS4: 00:35

FIFA 14:
XBO: 16:06 (including update)
PS4: 00:34

Madden 25:
XBO: 9:38 (including update)
PS4: 00:38
Pretty damn huge difference. Really surprised to see the PS4 excel by so much in this category. Last generation, the 360 handled these things much better and the PS3 didn't, although I think a lot of that had to do with Blu-ray being slower to read from than the 360's DVD drive.

Honestly, I'm not the type of person that thinks this is a deal breaker. If I felt the Xbone was the better system for me, I would still get it regardless of this. I dealt with install times on the PS3, which I felt were inferior to the 360, but that didn't stop me from enjoying games like MGS4.

It's just like installing a game on the computer. The big question is which system loads the game faster after being installed. I know when I place disc in now the game loads in 3-4 seconds.

It is exactly like installing a game on a computer. The thing is, the load time even after the game is installed takes a while. I hope they could fix this as soon as possible.

Pretty damn huge difference.

I think you left a couple things to the story out:

"How Long Until You Can First Play A Game On PS4 And Xbox One"

The PS4 obviously does not fully install as much to start the game as the Xbox One, but I really doubt much is actually doable or playable
at the 30 second point other than the opening intro and maybe menus. I mean how much from say 30 gigs can really even be downloaded
in 30 seconds at 9-11Mbps speed they were using.

You also left out this quote from the article:

"Once the games are fully installed, they take about the same amount of time to boot up on either console."

So this is a ONE TIME FIRST INSTALLATION ONLY slow start, NOT a every use one.

Do you have a source link???

The article is obviously written by a sony fan. I mean the title says it all adding (way too long) "installing Xbox one games takes way too long". I mean who is he to judge what's to long? Like I said its typical for a computer to take 5+ mins to install sometimes an hour to download on steam.

Anyways yes it is different from other generations you put a disc in and play. But I think with the wait the benefits come after! Love my Xbox one and glad I got it over the ps4 :)

I love my X1, but it does seem to take a very long time to install games.

That's unfortunate, but it doesn't seem like a huge deal. I've never installed games on my 360, since I've only had a 20 GB hard drive, do you need to install them on the X1?

Yeah installing all the games is a bummer it takes quite a bit to install aswell, today i purchased madden 25 via live and it took a good 30+ mins atleast and i have 35 mbps down, so i was like wow wish this could be wayyy faster

This reminds me of the debate that used to go on with the Zune HD from Microsoft vs. the iPhone from Apple’s loading time for Internet browsing. The Zune HD seemed to have taken longer because it was simply processing all the information at once while the iPhone was processing on the fly which gave the illusion that it was faster than the Zune HD. But that doesn’t mean it would make someone favor one product over the other or on small and practically insignificant aspect.

Like another user has stated, stripping out that crucial information that the games would have a similar booting time makes the difference. And honestly installing those huge games and wanting things to be too fast is just instant gravitation all over. I would kill for that kind of speed for my PC, I guess people are just fortunate to have everything quick and readily made available to them.

The inevitability of one shot installations and learning to be patient are the lessons to be learned in this thread.

Does anyone else find it hilarious that computers now don't really install the games when downloading from, say, Steam? So PCs have been moving away from installation but consoles are adopting installations. It's just something funny to me.

Yeah but you can play the game once it hits 10% which is about 10minutes or less, just can't play multiplayer

Bootup from Cold, Standby and game launch time (already installed)

That's quite a difference. The 360 back then can install faster than the PS3 (Ugggh... PS3 installs really slow. Dang). Now, it's the PS4's turn. Quite a surprise indeed. Now we're seeing something interesting. But then again, this is just the launch times so we'll see if the Xbox One can catch up.

Wow. Looking at those numbers, I'm surprised PS4 can install games in less than a minute. Maybe Xbox One needs some updates or something to catch up to lightning speeds of the PS4. Eh, well, that's how it is. We'll just see how this goes. But damn, those are some numbers the PS4 has.

Yeah though, 20-30GB in less than a minute makes no sense....on that note, what would WiFi have to do with anything if you are installing the disc on the HDD? Other than the patch updates for XB1

PS4 can install THAT fast? That's fast indeed. I'd give Xbox One a few more patches and it can probably install faster. Anyway, this is just the start. But it does give an idea how Sony and Microsoft did their consoles. We'll see in a few months.
