Microsoft is considering a system that will reward well-behaved Xbox Live users who contribute positively to the online community.

Development lead Frank Savage revealed Microsoft's plan during a talk at GDC aimed at ID@Xbox developers, as recounted by Polygon. If you have a good reputation and "you're this amazing player everyone wants to be with," Savage says, Xbox Live's reputation algorithm may recognise that and grant you a reward.

While only in the brainstorming phase at the moment, the eventual goal is to go beyond simply penalising players for bad behaviour, instead "actively encouraging" them to be better members of the community.

Well it certainly sounds promising, but MSFT has disappointed us in the past with similar incentives. Their Live Rewards and VIP program rewards actively gamers for their time and of course purchases, but doesn't do it in any way actually worth it. Rewarding gamers with 25-50 cents for $50 purchases isn't exactly a just reward. We can only help MSFT has learned from these past mistakes. What do you guys think of this concept?

I think this idea has potential, but it also seems really easy to abuse or manipulate the player rating system, so I don't put much stock in it at this point. I've seen some players that I absolutely KNEW were cheating (Call of Duty, Battlefield, etc.) and yet they had high player reps, which always makes me wonder.

Cheating is rampant especially on Battlefield. Well I think this is a great concept depending on the rewards that they plan on giving.

Haha, especially battlefield. I don't know what the deal is but I'm not sure whether if this will be possible. How can they track it?

Uhm, haven't really used the Xbox Live yet so I'm not yet sure. But this kind of reward system... just a few cents for purchasing something for $50? Kinda small.

They have to define what is good behavior. 'cuz it's kind of vague and faint. But it sounds like a good concept though. But man, to read that they only reward you a few cents for purchasing $50 worth of stuff? I hope they learned their mistakes this time.

I'd like to see more of the concept 'cuz this thing about rewarding gamers isn't exciting. Like what you said, rewarding just a few cents isn't really rewarding at all. Sony knows how to do the rewarding thing well. MSFT better explain more 'cuz I don't know exactly how rewarding it will be if you're the gamer everybody wants to be with.

Yup, Sony knows it well. Well, it was technically a promo when they gave you $10 bucks back whenever you purchased $50 but still, THAT was rewarding.

Yup, yup, yup. Sony knows the way to reward. MSFT has got to be clear about this 'cuz if all they do is just say it like that, then we'll never know straight away what they meant. They have to define it well.

Exactly. MSFT shouldn't just say their concept and leave it like that. THEY NEED TO DEFINE IT WELL.

They have to give us more than that, but I guess it would be bad for their business entirely.

Hey, I'll appreciate anything for free. Xbox Live Rewards is decent enough, although it doesn't blow me away. But again, it's a free thing that they do with their members, so I'll take it. One thing that I am bummed about is that I can't add money to my account anymore through Xbox.com...

Ahh... you mean, like adding funds via credit card or other means through the site, like how Sony does? Wow, when did that happen? When did they not let you do that anymore?

I guess they wanted to avoid getting super powered players off the bat. They will have it added later on in my opinion.

I guess so. Well they should still give that option to us. After all they will benefit from it.

Sounds good to me. It has a potential to attract more gamers by using a rewards system

This is great. I've always played fair and I would never mind to be awarded for my behavior. Good game, Xbox!

What exactly does rewarded mean?

This could be really good, or really disappointing. If the reward is something stupid. Why even waste are time. I think the whole bad behavior online issue is over blown. Trolls are not that bad. Not to mention that there is already a built in feature to deal with them.

If people some one is getting on your nerve then block them. Problem solved. I hope the reward thing means a free month of Xbox Live Gold, but you would probably have to reach some impossible level of reputation to get it.
