Thinking of upgrading your internet? Well, you might have a reason to do it now.

Metro UK has reported that most Xbox One and PS4 games will take 10.7 days to download on slower broadband connections. Yup, that much.

Gamers at the lowest end of the broadband speed scale will have to wait 10.7 days for a game to finish downloading on a 0.5Mb connection, while those who get 14.7Mb (the national average), will be staring at the download bar for 8 hours and 48 minutes.

Millions of UK households do not have the broadband speeds to deliver a reasonable download time for next gen games, according to Virgin Media.

Obviously they would say that, with director of broadband and home phone Joe Lathan hammering the advertisement home as he commented: ‘Anyone considering buying a next generation games console, now or for Christmas, should also think carefully about whether they’ve got the broadband to make the most of it. Virgin Media customers are set to get a substantial head start, and could be many levels ahead while others are still waiting.’

To show how they got to that number of days:

The research carried out by OnePoll with 2,000 UK adult who use games consoles in November 2013 will still be cause for worry for some gamers though – here’s the full list of speeds and resultant download times for one 50GB game:

0.5Mb 10.7 days
2Mb 2.7 days (65 hours)
10Mb 13 hours
14.7Mb (national average) 8 hr 48 mins
30Mb 4 hr 19 mins
60Mb 2 hr 9 mins
120Mb 65 mins
152Mb 51 mins

I know this is not pertaining to the USA or other countries but it does give you an interesting insight right? I guess my thoughts here is with more and more games going at higher size and with HD slowly becoming the norm now, seems we'll all be upgrading slowly but surely. Well, if we're all going to be downloading games, we're gonna have to go a bit higher on internet connections.

Interesting. Well, I fall under the 2MB category (I'm more on the 3MBPS actually) but yeah, it will take 30-40 hours. Yeah, we'll be upgrading slowly and slowly until we have speeds fast enough to download them big games. What can you do? With digital sales catching up to the retails, the internet companies will be expecting more people to upgrade.

Of course it'd take days on a slower connection. With games getting bigger and bigger, it's expected that you upgrade. You got to have the internet connection that can download the games in less time. Hehehe, but I don't think it'd be 10.7 days. Back in the day, it could've been 20 days! Glad i'm not on dial-up anymore.

That part of why I am only buying discs. I do have Xfinity Blast internet so speed is not a problem, but if space
ever becomes a problem and I have to uninstall and reinstall all the time, hours of wasted time will matter.

This doesnt make sense...i just downloaded madden 25 the other day and it only took about an hour..so how is this even correct?

Those numbers seem to extreme. Granted I have a 60mb down so my downloads take about 15-20 min

This is just like an estimate of the average time it'll take. And yeah, the internet speeds here don't give account on how efficient the internet speed is distributed. Also, this data was retrieved in UK. Doesn't apply to the USA. Pretty sure we'd see different numbers if the survey makes would do it in the USA. I guess it's just an idea how long it'd take to download all the games if we're still on a slow internet.

Hmmmm... I wouldn't say the numbers here are accurate. Some of my friends have some of these speeds and they download faster than what the survey suggests here. I guess it's different with every service provider huh? Maybe more efficient? Well, I still say these numbers aren't accurate. But yeah, it's based on UK so I can't be conclusive on this.

That's some vague information right there. First, because 0.5 Mb/s actually means that divided by 8 in MB/s. What's the difference? A game that has for example 4 GB would mean 32 in Gb. 32 divided by 0.0005 Gb/s (0.5 Mb/s) is 64000 seconds, which is only 17 hours. No even close to 10 days. That's why I say vague information. Very incorrect I may add.

If you look at the size of the launch titles there are only a couple which are anywhere near 50GB. So it looks like they are taking the extremes on game size combined with extremely slow internet, and maybe skewing the numbers on top of that, to make a sensational article.

Definitely taking it to the extreme with the time in my opinion. 10 days is a bit over the top but I guess they'll get correct statistics eventually or perhaps it depends on where in the world that they're testing those download times. I doubt it would take that long in the U.S.

Data's interesting. I'm amazed a 50GB can take that much for slower connections. But then it doesn't point out something: the service provider. While it can take long to download a 50GB, take note of the responses here. Some can download as fast 15-20 minutes on higher speeds. It could be, like what the others say here, the efficiency of the speed. Some service providers provide better quality and some don't.

My internet speeds are fast, but still, I'd rather purchase the game than attempt to download it using broadband. Even with a fast speed, it take a while.

Got to agree. This computation is right to the last digit. Well I also think that this vague info is inaccurate.

Well yeah, It is just an honest opinion of how long it would take on a slower internet. Well the data like you said was retrieved from UK. Honestly it's a lot different is the USA compared to UK.

Oh my gosh! I never considered the complication this would present. Well, I'm lucky enough to have a decent internet plan but seeing those numbers just makes me shudder in sympathy for people with slower internet plans. Do you think this could ever be a big enough problem that they release physical copies of their releases?

I don't think the data is that accurate. Well mine worked just fine. The download worked well. I don't think it would be a problem as long as you have a stable connection with the proper speed. Either way, I am enjoying my games and this console.

Yup, you're right. Checking out this article again and considering many things, this data isn't accurate. It never takes into account the many other sizes of the games, the service provider, the quality and other factors that can determine the true speed in downloading. I mean, why? A friend of mine uses a mobile broadband and he got his games fine. Well, it just shows us an interesting look anyway.

That's right. This survey is just a bit biased. Like what marthy points out, there are many factors that are missing in this survey. Maybe if the factors were put in, we'd have a better understanding. Either way, there's factors that should be considered,.

Even if the data isn't entirely accurate, there still is the huge possibility of slow download speeds. You never really know when your internet connection is going to fluctuate and it just might do so right as you're excitedly waiting for that shiny new game to finish downloading. I'm a bit old-fashioned and will be sticking to hard copies if I possible can.
