Microsoft has announced that more than three million Xbox One consoles were sold worldwide before the end of 2013. Previously, Microsoft announced that Xbox One sales passed 2 million in 18 days, half of which came in the first 24 hours. By comparison, we last heard that 2.1 million PlayStation 4 consoles had been sold as of early December, though Sony hasn’t announced sales numbers since the end of the year.

Mehdi added that he expects 2014 to be a “promising year,” pointing to upcoming releases including Titanfall, Sunset Overdrive, Project Spark, and many more. “Thank you for making 2013 truly epic for Xbox and here’s to 2014,” he concluded.

While I am curious to see what Sony's numbers look like, this is still a highly impressive feat and shows that unlike what analyst predicted, home consoles are still in demand. This is good news for all gamers and not just the MSFT fans because with a early large install base game developers can focus on just making great games and not needing to cater to a small market. This coming year will be big for all three consoles (Sony, Nintendo, and MSFT) so I'm sure this number can grow exponentially.

Edit: Sony has stated that the PS4 has sold 4.2 million units. Full story here: IGN

Impressive! I had thought that the hype for Xbox One was dead after the publicity fell, but it seems the die hard fans are sticking to Xbox.

thats a big number... how many markets has it hit and is it fully released at this point?

Pretty impressive, definitely curious as to see how many PS4s Sony has sold though. Its really only with those numbers in mind that you can really make a good comparison between the 2 consoles.

It looks as though Microsoft may have surpassed Sony's numbers? This would really be quite an accomplishment, especially since the PS4 launched earlier than the Xbox One!

This is significant as Sony has yet to state if the PlayStation 4 has pass the 3 million sales mark, meaning that the Xbox One may have passed the PlayStation 4 in sales. The PlayStation 4 initially had the edge in sales by a slim margin of around 100,000 units, the console has faced supply challenges which may have put it behind the Xbox One.

The x1 has only been released in 13 countries, I believe. This is great news indeed. Yes the PEGI ratings board does have Warframe listed for X1.

Yes, it was just released in 13 countries. So as soon as this goes out in asia the sales will be tripled.

Cool, way to go Microsoft. This just proves how popular Xbox One is. This will be even better if the other countries could have it. If they successfully penetrate asia the sales would be even higher. I guess it would even triple (like what the other guy said) or more.

i wouldnt hold your breath on that. china/asia are pretty much sony territory xbox may sell but i would put it a 2:1 in favor of sony

You're right, well Sony has monopolized asia in a way that even the phones are mostly sony and samsung (like what my cousin says). I hope that when they see this bad boy working they'll change their minds. Well I have nothing against PS4. Since I have PS4 as well.

Wow, just wow. They caught up with Sony eh? Impressive indeed. Yeah, we still got to see what Sony's numbers are. And yes, agreed: Sony owns Asia. But hey, not bad for Microsoft.

We'll see how they'll go with the Asian penetration. For now, Sony's dominating there. If they can do what they can, then those numbers will go up.

Glad to know there were so many sales within that short period of time. Though I feel the part Mehdi stated in the IGN article with how gamers are their inspiration to do better as euphemism for “thanks for the cash guys.”

Though I shouldn’t really be a critic on him because some of these guys are genuinely in it for making sure their works are actually creating impact for gamers. Maybe there’s going to be a continuing trend with the increase in sales, though I figure that the lineups for the games, and people going crazy over YouTube to whoever makes long-plays and such can contribute to better sales.

You don’t know how many games I bought was solely because I watched the gameplay and the several reviews on them. Social media is definitely going to be the sustaining factor in this, though I don’t think developers need to be concerned about that.

Wow, 4.2 million?! That's.... a lot. All right, Sony just bypassed their goal of 3 million. Seems the all-in-one entertainment slogan hasn't sinked in for gamers yet. We'll see. But still, not bad for both companies to sell so many consoles in such a short span of time.

4.2 million. So Sony managed to exceed their lofty goal of 3 million by the end of 2013. Congrats to the Sony. And congrats to Microsoft. This next-gen launch has really surprised me a lot. Didnt think they can reach those numbers. Now we shall see the rest of the Q1 2014.

Good job on both companies for getting their consoles out their and selling a comfortable margin. Now let's get over the hump and continue a steady pace. I'm of the mind that more purchases of the consoles would have been made if people weren't waiting for certain games. I here it all the time about the Wii U where people are insisting that their waiting for Zelda/Mario Kart/Smash before they buy a console. This launch has been impressive and I can't wait to see the numbers after games like Watch Dogs come out.

Even though Microsoft isn't doing as good as Sony but passing the three million mark in just a couple of months is still a pretty impressive feat. The race isn't over yet, we won't know until at least the Xbox is released worldwide. Who knows, maybe there will be jump in sales this year.
