Microsoft has announced that more than three million Xbox One consoles were sold worldwide before the end of 2013. Previously, Microsoft announced that Xbox One sales passed 2 million in 18 days, half of which came in the first 24 hours. By comparison, we last heard that 2.1 million PlayStation 4 consoles had been sold as of early December, though Sony hasn’t announced sales numbers since the end of the year.
Mehdi added that he expects 2014 to be a “promising year,” pointing to upcoming releases including Titanfall, Sunset Overdrive, Project Spark, and many more. “Thank you for making 2013 truly epic for Xbox and here’s to 2014,” he concluded.

While I am curious to see what Sony's numbers look like, this is still a highly impressive feat and shows that unlike what analyst predicted, home consoles are still in demand. This is good news for all gamers and not just the MSFT fans because with a early large install base game developers can focus on just making great games and not needing to cater to a small market. This coming year will be big for all three consoles (Sony, Nintendo, and MSFT) so I'm sure this number can grow exponentially.
Edit: Sony has stated that the PS4 has sold 4.2 million units. Full story here: IGN
