Update: Sony has now confirmed that 3D Blu-ray movies "will not be compatible at launch, providing the following statement to Eurogamer:

"Technically, the PS4 system supports 3D gameplay at launch on day one, though no launch titles are currently 3D compatible. 3D Blu-ray movies will not be compatible at launch."

Microsoft confirmed the Xbox One’s lack of 3D Blu-ray playback to the folks over at CNet, though a spokesperson for the company didn't rule out adding the feature through an update later on. In all probability, whether or not the feature comes available will likely depend on how big the demand is for it.

As far as the Sony PS4 is concerned, Engadget has confirmed that the console will feature 3D Blu-ray support, just as its predecessor the PS3 does. To do so, users will be required to activate their console and download the initial 1.50 firmware update, then they’ll be ready to go. As well as Blu-rays, the PlayStation 4 will also support 3D gameplay, the features of which were discussed in its new FAQ page that was posted last week, although there will be little to no 3D games available to buy at launch.

So what do you guys think about the fact that the Xbox One doesn't have 3D Blu-Ray support and the fact that the PS4 does? If they can add it as a system update, cool, but honestly, I'm not sure how long the 3D Blu-Ray thing will last. Do you think it's here to stay? I think that it won't really stick until they can produce the 3D effect without glasses.

Honestly I cant see this being a big deal. I go to BB all the time and they only have 1...1 shelf of Blu-ray 3D movies, and their TV's are dwindling. So its slowly dieing out. Im sure there ARE people who use Blu-ray 3D all the time and will be upset, but im sure the other camp will run with this lie they have been lol. Now if this was just standard Blu-ray dics...I would flip a nut!!! lol I am a huge movie guy and I have ALOT of blu-rays and watch them all the time, and im sure those are in greater numbers than 3d Blu-ray peeps. Just to add, I saw they said if there is demand for it, I agree. it probably wont even get warranted.

Well I recently sold my Samsung 3D TV and purchased a Sharp Smart Tv, so I'm actually not interested in 3D Blurays. No harm, no foul

Sorry, but I can care less...

3D can be cool and i'm sure this isn't anything to worry about. I can't see them not adding this later as a software update. As far as 3d i was never a big fan. Makes the screen too dark. Now when non glasses 3d sets ever get here than i'll be on that all day long.

Wow, I first read this as "Xbox won't play blu-ray movies".....I missed the whole "3D" clarifying part. lol

I don't even own a single Blu-Ray movie, my Wife and I went from DVD to streaming, never owned a blu-ray player. It'll be nice to have a blu-ray player in the Xbox One, but I never imagine we'll own a 3d tv, we don't like watching stuff in 3d.

Overall, not an issue.

Doesn't bother me whether it ever has the ability to play them. I thought the same thing as Landshark when I first read this thread, missing the whole 3D part.

I do have some 3D movies I wouldn't mind watching though. I'm a little mystified at this one. I don't get how in 2013 you can launch a console with a Blu-Ray player and it not support #D movies out of the gate.

Not even close to a dealbreaker. But it is disappointing.

It will come eventually. The 3D market is falling apart anyway. It's all about 4K now. Let's see what comes about, the movie makers are still making 3D movies only to attract people to the theater but at home it just never took off.

'How will we force you to watch your movies?' has fallen to the wayside thanks to streaming and/or torrents. No more will we have to make the hard choice of watching Elf on BluRay or HD DVD. Thank you, oh wise and powerful keeper of clouds.

One of my HDTV's can show 3D, I don't remember the last time I even used it though.

I do have a couple 3D DVD's, but they also include regular BluRay too, so I am OK about it.

I am not even sure if I would use it if they added it, but if easy enough to add I would not mind.

Personally, digital downloads are the way to go. I still purchase blu-rays, however, I'm finding I'm enjoying my videos via downloads.

I figure at this point if you own 3D blu-ray discs you already have a 3d blu-ray player. Ultimately not having 3D blu-ray in the Xbox One only affects people who want to start buying 3d movies. I'm not rocket scientist, but I'm under the impression that 3D is more a niche market that is slowly dying.

When the 360 decided against using blu-ray technology, it didn't faze me a bit. I have a separate blu-ray player.

I think things like Oculus Rift will help popularize 3D gaming. PS4 is doing the smart thing by including it, though it may be too ahead of its time to be worth using resources on.

I feel 3D in general is a "gimmicky" technology that keeps resurrecting itself every decade or so. I feel it is going to disappear again soon. Don't know too many people interested in it. Personally, it gives me a headache watching it for a long stretch of time.

This I agree with. It was somewhat popular back in the 60's/70's as well, but never caught on. Time and Time again the 'fad' returns, but then fades away.
